can someone clarify what does 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift mean?

Hi i'm currently a nursing student and am currently also a CNA. I want to work as a CNA while going to school. I was looking at job posting but dont really know what tele means or med-surg or what the difference is? also what does 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift mean? I'm confused. Also in some job postings what does it mean when it says 0.500, or 0.200 or even 0.600? If anyone can help shed some light for me i'd be so ever grateful. Thank you:yeah:

Tele is telemetry. These patients are on continuous heart monitoring. Not ICU, but those that need to be monitored at a lower acuity.

Med surg is the catch all medical-surgical floor. These are general adult patients and can have any number of problems. The surgical part is a bit a mis-nomer at the hospital I work for. We have a surgical floor, and a Med-surg floor. The med-surg are not usually immediate post surgical, but may have had surgery recently, and are still recovering, or may be needing surgery.

1st shift is the day shift 7am - 3 pm. 2nd shift is evening 3 pm to 11 pm. 3rd shift is the night shift 11 pm - 7 am.

As for the 0.200, 0.500, 0.600, I have no idea. That could be some internal job coding the site you are using has. You could talk to human resources.

These are typical times for the shifts, but this can vary considerably by facility. Some long-term care (LTC) places start everything an hour earlier. There are also oddball shifts like 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Not sure what those shifts would be called. And some places have shifts that overlap during the busiest times.

what does it mean when it says 0.500, or 0.200 or even 0.600?

My guess would be 5:00, 2:00, and 6:00. Your best bet is to ask whenever you are unclear about something.

my guess for the 0.200 etc would be the number of hours you work like full time, part time....i have heard of some places differentiating things in that way but i could be wrong.

Here in New Zealand 1.0 is considered full times, and then 0.800 would be considered 80% of full time hours etc...
