Can you search for jobs in CA and AZ?

Published

I'm planning to get my license in Iowa then move SW. Do I have to change anything with my license to get a job in Arizona since both Iowa and Arizona are compact states? Or can I simply move there and start applying? Also, at the same time can I search for jobs in California..or is the case that if my license is endorsed in California it isn't also good in the compact states at the same time?

You'll have to check with the AZ Board of Nursing (BON) and the CA BON. I know in CA it's a bit complicated even with an IA License. I think you'll have to get finger prints done and so on.

You will need to obtain an Arizona nursing license if you intend to live and work in Arizona. You will need a California license if you intend to live and work in California.

Even though Iowa and Arizona are members of the Nursing Licensure Compact, you will still need to declare a home state for your license. If you decide to work in Arizona under your Iowa license, you can only do so for 30 days total. After the 30 days has elapsed, you will definitely need an Arizona nursing license in order to continue working legally in Arizona.

A nursing license is similar to a driver's license. Once you have moved to Arizona, you can drive under your Iowa license for 30 days, then you will need to obtain an Arizona driver's license in order to keep driving legally in your new home state. It is the exact same concept with a nursing license that is from a Compact state.

Thank you for explaining the way a nursing license between compact states. But, I'm still uncertain about one thing....would it make sense to apply for jobs in California and Arizona at the same time or would it take so long to transfer my license that those states wouldn't have employers interested in me?

Say I have my license endorsed by California, then some place in AZ offers me a job. How long should it take to transfer my license?

Thanks for all your help!

The California BRN (Board of Registered Nursing) is notoriously slow, especially with the budget cutbacks and forced furloughs. If you try to endorse your California license into Arizona, the process might take a couple of months or longer, because the CA BRN takes their sweet time with the processing of paperwork and the verification of licensure.

Yes, CA is taking their sweet time with me and it is frustrating to no end. Of course, there was almost no delay in cashing my check!!!!! They're on top of their game when it comes to receiving money.
