  1. Yes, CA is taking their sweet time with me and it is frustrating to no end. Of course, there was almost no delay in cashing my check!!!!! They're on top of their game when it comes to receiving money.
  2. I am interested in pursuing a flight nurse career job. I have 3 years CTICU experience with PALS, ACLS, BLS. How do I get started and/or look for a company? What kind of training do I need? I live in Southern California, so I would want to stay in the area. I cannot find any helpful websites, so if anyone could give me a connection (website, phone number), that would be excellent. And finally, and possibly to my detriment in this desired career, I frequently get motion sickness. :barf01:
  3. What department are you looking to interview with? You should interview with at least a few. Unless you're a criminal, you have excellent chances of attaining a position with one of the departments. The new Westwood Hospital (to be opened next year) will have more beds, especially ICU beds, and more nurses will be needed. Advice: Show confidence (or fake it, like I did)
  4. Hi. My name is Emilie and I started as a new grad at UCLA about a year and a half ago. I highly recommend starting at UCLA because so many of the other staff members learn right along with you. Out of nursing school, I started in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit ("the mother of all ICUs"), where we have both peds and adults. We recover heart and lung transplant patients, aneurisms, valve repairs, correct congenital anomalies, to name a few. Not a day goes by where I don't feel challenged and fulfilled; there are countless opportunities to learn. Anyone who will be interviewing at UCLA, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I have the inside scoop pretty much, and I know the recruiter very well and some of the nursing managers too. Hopefully I can be of some help to you or maybe show you around.
  5. After surgery, our patients come up on similar settings (IMV, 100% FIO2, PEEP, PS, delta P). We then wean the FIO2 and may change the rate, based on the ABGs or end tidal CO2. Then, the pt is placed on pressure support mode (with FIO2 support usually between 30-40%). If they tolerate that for an hour or so, the RT will check the NIF and the tidal volumes, x-ray will be checked - if all these things look good, then we extubate.
  6. I was a new grad to the CTICU at UCLA about a year and a half ago. On this unit, we do it all. Our new grad program is excellent, in my opinion, and we have trained many others since then. I always research the medications I am unfamiliar with, ask tons of questions, and attend as many advanced training sessions as possible (AACN is having a conference in April in PA). My next goal is to take the CCRN exam.
  7. "are ICU and critical care nurse positions available for the new grad BSN?" As a new grad BSN (and having a previous BS in biology), I was accepted into UCLA's new grad program and currently work in the CTICU with the intent of moving on to nursing anesthesia. So, in response to your question, yes, there are certainly critical care nurse positions out there for you. And, if you don't make it right away, you can probably transfer after several months in another unit.
