Can Risperdal Consta be given in ventrogluteal site?

I work as a community mental health nurse. I know that the ventrogluteal site is best practice site for IM injections. in the Risperdal Consta injection guide it only shows deltoid and dorsogluteal sites as options. I am wondering if it is ok to do ventrogluteal site even though drug guide indicates dorsogluteal or deltoid?

    I've always given Consta in the dorsogluteal site. It's too uncomfortable to give in the deltoid, based in patient feedback. For the depot injections, I've found that the bigger the muscle, the better...so I personally wouldn't see a problem giving it ventrogluteally or even in the vastus lateralis. I stick to dorsogluteal because it's pretty easy to do in an outpatient setting.

    However, have you thought about dropping the manufactures a note to ask if the ventrogluteal site is acceptable, just to see what they have to say?

    This is what I read also, but I just wonder why ventrogluteal site coud not be used? Everything I have read lately is that ventrogluteal site is being recommended as best practice over dorsogluteal site due to concerns of hitting sciatic nerve with dorsogluteal site. I have had patients report that they received the Risperdal Consta injection in the hip when in the hospital. I want to implement best practice guidelines but also make sure that I am not doing anything that would be contraindicated.

    The "upper-outer quadrant of the gluteal area" is the ventrogluteal site.Those instructions I quoted were directly from the manufacturer's website.

    The dorsogluteal is the site that is illustrated in the instructions. The ventrogluteal site is located closer to the hip.

    Seriously OP, why not call/e-mail the manufacturers and ask if there is any contraindication to a ventrogluteal injection? That would provide the definitive answer to your question.

    Let us know what you find out, I'm rather curious myself as to what they think. When it comes to IMs, I'm personally a vastus lateralis fan, but I've always done depot injections in the gluteal muscle.

    I work in the community too and we don't have a whole lot of privacy for giving injections. We give most of our IMs in the delt. The pts prefer it that way. We do have one pt on Consta that prefers the DG site though. Depot injections under 1.5 mls go in the delt too. We have on pt on 2 ml Prolixin Dec and she gets hers in the DG too. We also have a wheelchair bound client who likes his in the VL and I wish he would let us do it somewhere else. That leg is pretty spastic, it makes getting the injection done more challenging.
