can you really tell the difference?

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hi everyone, I am new to this board and have a few questions. I will be starting clinicals in the fall 04 for my BSN and would love to become a Midwife in the future. Is a CNM without previous rn experience really that more noticable than a CNM with LD experience? Is it possible to become a successful CNM without a year of LD? Also, there are schools that dont require previous experience (Emory, , Marquette U....) does that mean that they give adequate clinical experience to become a good midwife? thanks for any replies

I wanted to be a CNM too when I graduated nursing school. Well, I have gotten 2 years experience in L&D and changed my mind. I really would rather teach and work L&D part-time. I have alot of respect for CNMs and alot of the time I feel like I could manage the pts labor better then the doc, however I have also realized how much liabilty there is. Also, I really enjoy my role as a nurse with the pt. so, I would recommend getting experience first.

As far as how hard it is to return well..I am going back this fall for a Family NP degree. It is hard but for me it would have been harder to go straight out of nursing school. I would have burnt out so bad and probably failed out! :) Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.

Oh- and your original question- all the CNMs I know had previous experience.

Thanks you guys!:rotfl: You all have given me so much to think about. I know 4 sure that I am going to work before I attend graduate school. At first, all I had in mind was finishing school. I will be 26 yrs old when I graduate with my BSN (24 now) and I felt like I would be too old to wait a few years before cnm. I also have a family and I just want to hurry and start my career. After reading all of your post, I have realized that you are never too old to further your education. I also want to master my skills and bedside manners in L&D. I really want to become a wonderful RN and CMN. And that is whats really important. Thanks everyone.
