Can a new grad ADN get hired in a NICU/PICU/L&D position?

(Preface: I'm new, so if this question has been answered a million times, I apologize! 😬😊)

I am going to apply to STLCC's program at Meramec in the fall. I am hoping to work in a pediatric ICU setting or L&D. I know these are typically competitive positions, but I am wondering if any of the big hospital networks in the St. Louis area are hiring new ADNs in those units or if they will only hire BSNs. I would have to complete a few more prereqs before I could apply to UMSL or Golfarb's programs. If I do complete the program at STLCC, I will probably go almost immediately into an RN to BSN program right after.

As as a little background, I do have NICU experience as a PCA but that was in 2009-2010.

Just trying to to get some insight as this might way into my decision regarding which program(s) I pursue.

I'm graduating from SCC's ADN program in May and have been exploring all the new grad jobs available. Mercy probably has the most opportunities for new grads in specialty areas. You are right, it's very competitive. I went to a fellowship open house and most specialties only hire about 6-8 new grads out of hundreds of applicants. SSM and BJC have similar programs, but you might have to start in a different area first to get experience. One of my classmates just got hired at Mercy for L&D as a new grad, so it is possible though!

I'd go the BSN route if you are set on those specialties and wouldn't be interested in starting out elsewhere. Although anything is possible, with an ADN you will most likely be at the bottom of hiring preference for popular units that only hire 6-8 new grads. And STL has a lot of BSN grads.

I graduated with my RN diploma just last week and start a nicu fellowship at children's hospital in March
