So I had a career. A Good job, made descent money, stable...something was "missing"...so what did I do? I went and became a nurse. Cut down my hours at work, studied hard and then passed NCLEX and got my license. Yay for me right?? WRONG...

Now I am underemployed, my old job is long gone and filled with someone new and I cannot get a nursing job to save my life. So Far NURSING SUCKS- I really want to make it work, I have a passion for nursing, but it is SO DEMOTIVATING to get this emails EVERYDAY that say We regret to inform you that we are not interested in interviewing you. I apply all over the country, every single day, my husband is down to move anywhere I find a job(what a guy)... and yet the same thing every single day "We regret to inform you"... u suck. I just do not get it, Do you want me to be more educated? then I would have my own practice... want me to be more eager? i can stalk u if u really want me to! ... Want me to sell myself better on my resume and cover letter? Well Ok just dont try and check any of those facts i made up...

I know there are a lot of us New Grads, I am just one that could not go another day without venting this frustration. I know once I find a job, it will be better, but until then I really wish i would have become a nurse 10 years ago, or picked a profession that actually wanted new people.

There is NO NURSING shortage, I am SO sick of hearing there is.

Anyone else hating this whole Life as a New grad thing??

The worst is when I get NOTHING and I go back online where I applied, log in and check my Status and it says Completed. I don't even check anymore.

and if you are an RN your license will exclude you from the whole deal. Again it's about liability. The example being if you were getting magazines and cokes for family and the patient in that room coded and you did not recognize it, you would very likely legally be held responsible too, because you are a nurse. This is why nurses are not given volunteer positions. It clouds things. You can never say, "Oh, I wasn't working as a nurse" because if you are in a patient care area you will be held to your license.

Where does this information come from? I'm from one of the most litigious states in America and I can't imagine this scenario. If I'm visiting a patient and I happen to be a licensed RN, will I be sued if I fail to notice that the patient's roommate is coding? What if I'm a retired nurse, are there no retired nurses volunteering in hospitals?

And today I saw an ad online that says COME TO THE USA- be a nurse! These companies are bringing foreign people in, sponsoring them and helping them to get their license. I'm sure they don't Validate their employment history, they just bring them here. So frustrating. There are thousands of unemployed/underemployed RNs ready and waiting but yet they keep shipping in people to fill up the hospitals. I have now began checking the minorities box, the male box and the disabilities box. Something will work lol

Sorry to hear about your experience so far, it took me about 4 months & having to relocate 6 hours away from home to get a job. In Pittsburgh UPMC has a lot of facilities and they seem to hire new grads all the time maybe you check them out--and they hire nurses with Associates. Good luck to you.

It's definitely rare isn't it?

You mean you actually get REJECTION EMAILS? Contact?? Acknowledgement that you applied for a job there? Acknowledgement that you breathe?? I don't!

I applied for penn st Hershey I am waiting to see if I get selected for an interview. Pa seems to have a lot of options for new grads. I am in las Vegas and there is NOTHING here.

I think in certain states they will not accept an RN as a volunteer, not because of if something life threatening happens(Good Samaritan) but just in general you might teach patients or use your nursing skills without even realizing you are doing it which could pose an issue for the hospital since you are not doing it under their protocols. At one rehab facility they only call the MD if a seizure >2 minutes. If I was there watching someone seize, not knowing their protocols, I may intervene in a way that the facility does not support, because I have the knowledge to whereas a layman volunteer would get the nurse immediately and would have very little knowledge of what to do.

I'm sorry correction the facility I was referring to does not intervene unless seizure >2 min, they only call MD if seizure >3 minutes. The patients there have TBI or spinal cord injuries.

Are you a minority and disabled? What sort of disability do you have? I think it probably would be best not to check off the disability box if you have a choice you might be discriminated against without your knowing, also if you have an unusual or ethnic name. Discrimination may be against the law but it is very hard to prove before you have even been hired. I know someone who actually legally changed his name from a polish last name to Peters and named his child Victoria because he was concerned that she have a proper business name to help her future career. He worked in banking, investments, the IRS and became a lawyer. I can't really say if his career would have been hindered by his ethnic last name, but he felt it would. Although it is kind of sad to feel you have to deny who you are to get a job and promotion.

Re getting a job as a new grad I think a big part of the problem is that hospitals have hiring freezing and understaff on purpose to save money, although they don't mind forking out for lots of overtime to the RN's they already have. We are supposedly full, but we are short on almost a daily basis. They simply don't hire enough staff and want to get by with less to save money, counting on the staff they have to either work short or do overtime. It's all about the budget!

I was lucky.. A client of my dads happened to be a don at a Ltc facility and took a chance on me, amd I've made her pretty happy lol. After doing most of my clinical rotations in Ltc I vowed not to work in one, but took the blessed opportunity that was given to me and it's been a great experience. Anyone That you know that can get your foot in the door call them for a favor.

I don't know about volunteering in an organization like a hospital when you hold an RN license, but I know that at least in NH, where I live, I can volunteer with the Red Cross and get training to be a nurse for them, performing nursing duties (I'm hoping to do just that when I get settled). Also, I just called the BON to ask if I would be able to volunteer in the nurse's office at my kids' schools; I would not be acting as a nurse but rather assisting with filing and such. The woman at the BON said I could work up to my license, depending on what the school nurse wanted me to do (I did not pursue it with the school nurse). Hospitals can't use a volunteer to do a job that someone is supposed to be getting paid to do, but organizations like the Red Cross, Samaritan's Purse, and others are always looking for actual nurse volunteers, including new and sort-of new people that they can train.
