Can I major in Health and Human Performances, minor in Biology (Please read Descr.?

Published

I am interested in Nursing, and have chosen to do an alternative approach. Would I be able to take a nursing program with majoring in Health and Human Performances, and minoring in Biology?

Or, would it be easier to just major in Health Science.

Is there another approach I could take in my undergrad that will help me get into a Nursing program? (without, of course, majoring in nursing)

Thank you.

Nursing is its own undergraduate degree. You do not need to major in something else first, and majoring in more than one degree is going to likely be impossible due to the requirements of clinicals and the rigors of a nursing program. Find nursing programs that you would like to apply to, and complete the prerequisites required to apply. If you have questions about nursing programs, you should speak with an admissions advisor at the school(s) you are interested in. These advisors will be able to help you by providing accurate information.

There are second-degree programs out there for those who already have a bachelors degree. These tend to be aimed at people changing careers. Personally, if I were someone who wanted to be a nurse, I would not waste money getting another degree first.

I completely agree with RoseQueen, you do not need an undergraduate major in another field before pursuing nursing. You will, however, be required to take pre-requisite courses before you can apply to the nursing program, such as Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, math, etc. Most colleges/universities have a Pre-Nursing "major" that you're put into until you complete your pre-requisites. I would suggest you contact the schools you're interested in attending and find out the requirements for admission to the nursing program. Once you've determined where you want to go, set up an appointment with the nursing advisor so you can schedule your pre-requisites correctly and stay on track for your application cycle.

Why not just apply directly for nursing as a major? There is no real advantage to majoring in Health and Human performance, unless you are unsure about nursing and are leaving a door open to go on to other healthcare professions. Choosing to major in something else and then come back to nursing will only add time and expense to the education process.
