Can I go to CC and transfer into a BSN program?

Published

I'm a high school senior and I plan on going to a community college (CC). My ultimate goal is to be a registered nurse with a BSN, not an ADN.

There's many ways to get an BSN, and I know a popular way is to get your ADN, then take the RN to BSN route to finally get your bachelor's. I don't really want to take this route though.

* Question: Is there a way I get my general education/pre-req's done at a CC, which will take 2-3 years, then transfer to a university and start a BSN program there? I don't want to get my associate's, then my bachelor's. I just wanna get my general stuff done at a CC and transfer to a university to get my BSN.

Doing my gen ed/pre-req's, then doing an ADN program, then doing a RN-BSN program seems more of a hassle than getting my general stuff done and transferring to a BSN program at a uni. If anything seems confusing to you, please just reply and I'll get back to you. I've been wondering about this for over a year and I keep getting even more confused. If it matters, I live in SoCal and looking to transfer to a good cal state (since UC's tend to not have nursing programs?). Thanks!

A lot of people transfer from CC to a university to complete their BSN; I did so by getting a Gen-Ed Associates and continued on for my BSN.

In more direct terms:

What's a Gen-Ed Associates? Does that mean you got an Associates and then continued for your BSN? Or you just did your 60 units, didn't get a degree, and transfer on to a uni for your bachelors?

Yes I got an AA degree at my CC; when I applied to my program, the university that accepted me transferred the required courses that would fit in; they transferred 60 credits; I had more, only because I had cast my net wide in terms of my area nursing programs I was interested in getting into, then completed my BSN.

Thats what I did and I think its the smartest and cheapest way to go.

This is exactly what I'm doing! Works for me!

This is where I think I'm being confusing. :/

I want to get my gen ed done and transfer to a uni to get my bachelors, I don't want to get an associates at all. Whereas in your case, you got an AA then continued on to get your BSN. I only want to go through one program: a BSN program.. is this still possible?

I know getting an ADN then a BSN is completely possible and tons of people do it, but is it possible to go to a community college with no degree and transfer to a uni to get my bachelors, is basically what I'm asking?

You did your ADN then got your BSN? That's not exactly what I'm asking but I think I'm being very confusing, lol. But I'm curious, how long did your ADN and your BSN take? And did you have a wait-time, if so, how long?

womanofchoice; there's no confusion;

I went to a CC; I went and got an Associates Degree, applied to a BSN program, and got in. No ADN...just an AA in Gen-Ed.

I decided to get an Associates due to the fact that I didn't know when I could possibly get in; I'm glad I did; I didn't enter a Nursing program for five years; no waiting list or anything...life happened. I didn't have to take any classes over, and I went in taking my nursing courses; that's how it worked for me.

Your posts have been crystal clear; what you need to understand is what your are doing IS possible AND normal; a lot of people do this; a lot more opt to get the Associates as well; you can get a AA in Gen-Ed and transfer, or not; it's your choice; however think about the possibility of credits expiring; a lot of times with a degree, the credits don't, at least in my area.

Yes, it is entirely possible and people do it all the time

I think it must depend on the university you wish to attend. The university I attend will hand you back your application for the BSN program and tell you to apply to a community college program if you did all of your prerequisites at a community college and then attempted to apply for their BSN program. However, the posters above say it is possible in the areas they live in, so it must be ok elsewhere in the country. I would contact the nursing advisor at the university you ultimately want to attend and ask what your chances of acceptance will be if you complete all your prerequisites at a community college and then attempt to transfer to the university. Best of luck!

Yeah. Im doing the same thing. Im also here at SoCal. My counselor discouraged me from doing the adn at my CC. Both ADN and BSN takes 2-3 years to complete so I'd rather do BSN at a CSU. For your question, yes you definitely can do your ge's at cc and transfer to csu. Use assist.org to know which courses will transfer to CSU of your choice. Also, talk to a counselor at a CC, they can help you transfer. I'm on my way to transferring to CSU long beach and I'm done with most of the prereqs. Most of all, get good grades. A lot of people do the CC to CSU path, but they underestimate the load of GE's at CC's. Do great and you'll be sure to transfer. In short, it's ok to not do the adn, you can go straight to BSN once you transfer.
