  1. We are not allowed to use personal calculators for our medication administration exams either. They bring a huge bucket of cheap calculators and everyone grabs one before the exam. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with them. It's just your basic 4 function calculator, but that's all you need for dosage cal. If I were you, I would just make sure to check your answer more than once.
  2. I am in my first semester of nursing school. I have a husband and a son at home, and I also hold a part time job at a local hospital. The first week was mind blowing. Now that we are a few weeks in, it's not so bad. I know what to expect and I have been planning everything accordingly. I use all of my time wisely. I think this is really the key here. Make sure you're never wasting time. I work 6am-230pm every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Tuesdays I have class from 9am-350pm. (2 classes) Wednesdays I am off and out of school. I spend that day studying and catching up on housework. Thursdays I have class from 9am-150pm(2 classes) Fridays I have class from 9-1150. I am taking 5 classes total. (BSN program) My son is in elementary school so he gets out of school at 3pm and I will study until it is time to pick him up on those days. On Tuesdays my sister picks him up from school. All of our tests are scheduled outside of class time so as to not disrupt lectures. Most are scheduled 8-9am before class starts. I will start clinicals next semester and we will have lecture 2 days a week and clinicals 2 days a week.
  3. I think it must depend on the university you wish to attend. The university I attend will hand you back your application for the BSN program and tell you to apply to a community college program if you did all of your prerequisites at a community college and then attempted to apply for their BSN program. However, the posters above say it is possible in the areas they live in, so it must be ok elsewhere in the country. I would contact the nursing advisor at the university you ultimately want to attend and ask what your chances of acceptance will be if you complete all your prerequisites at a community college and then attempt to transfer to the university. Best of luck!
  4. At the University I attend, you just have to have your application submitted by 5pm on the application deadline. No applications are reviewed prior to the deadline, so it doesn't matter if you submitted it a year in advance, or the day before the deadline. I would look into the specific instructions for the schools you are applying for and be sure. My school has an advisor that answers questions like these :) Best of luck!
  5. I would check to see if there are any technology requirements for the nursing program you would like to attend. The nursing program I am starting in January requires a small laptop and an iPod touch prior to the beginning of classes. Of course, I have a desktop computer and an iPad. I had to purchase all new technology!
  6. The University I attend will not allow it. If you do not accept your seat, it is given to the next person on the waiting list. I imagine it varies from school to school.
  7. I had to deal with certified background for my background check, drug test, and medical document manager. My background check came back in about 8 hours. My drug test took 2 weeks for them to post my results, but they had an issue getting the information from the facility I took my test at.
  8. A couple of years ago I switched my major from nursing to something else, and completely bombed almost everything. I thought I would never be able to get into the nursing program because my GPA had lowered so much. I scheduled a meeting with the nursing advisor anyway and she told me that the only classes the college of nursing even considers are the nursing prerequisites, which i had all As and Bs in. I was accepted into my BSN program for this coming Spring with an overall GPA of 2.68 and a nursing prerequisite GPA of 3.52. So, I would say that the other courses probably won't even matter.
