So my fiance has a really great job offer to fly jets in Bejing, but I am just finishing nursing school with my RN, I do not want to move out there if i cannot work the time we are there. We plan on living there for 2-4 yrs to save up money and move back to the united states. Can I work over there as someone with lil to no experience? Is it impossible to work there if I only speak english? Please help give me any and all info you have. Btw, pay wont matter for my job bc my fiance will be doing well enough, so i just want to be working so i have experience for when I come back. thanks!

The federal government may have some jobs overseas. But currently there are no available RN positions in China.

This is also some good advice stating your options for jobs will be limited since you only speak English.

Good luck!
wow, thank you, that may help quite a bit. Most jobs want you to be fluent in mandarin and english. Maybe with the help of these websites I can still get hired.

If you go on ebay you can find some good Mandarin learning tools. You may also want to try Living Language-Ultimate Chinese (I believe it's for Mandarin) and they have some basic-advanced courses to help you. If you also try Penton Overseas they do have some vocabulary builders that can add about 4K words to word bank. Those are all reasonable price courses. You wont be fluent overnight, but with practice you will be able to speak it. Good Luck :-)

Does any one know if an American RN license works in China? I'm also in the same boat as the person who posted. My husband has to relocate to China. I graduated a year ago but no working experience because I took some time off to take care of my baby. I desperately want to work as a nurse.

We are moving to Dalian China in 2 weeks. I was told that I could not work as an RN in China unless I pass and Equivalent to the Chinese NCLEX. We are only going to be there for 1.5 years so it is not worth my time. Going to work on my RN-BSN instead. If you are looking to study the Chinese language Pimsleur is one of the best for learning the proper tones. You can usually borrow the first part of the series from your local library. On another note... the company my husband works for is contracted with ISOS which is an international healthcare company. You might contact them about job options, although they are the ones who told me I would have to pass the "Chinese NCLEX" you might get some different information. Good luck!

If your fiance is flying jets, how often will he be in beijing. I would agree with other posters that I don't think you can work in China unless you take their nursing exam. I would check out Saipan, Guam, Marshall Islands (Kwajalein), or Singapore if you would like to practice close by.

Hello,
I am a Canadian RN with 4yrs experience on Surgical/Medical units. I am relocating to Shanghai with my husband. I don't speak any mandarin so I understand I will need to work in the private sector. Could someone tell me what the average monthly salary is (working as a nurse)?
Do you need to take the nursing exam regardless of if you work in the private sector or not?
Thank you in advance!

I live in a smaller tier 2 city that does not have many expats. Shanghai may have more options for finding work. I was told by the director of our local medical clinic that I would have to pass the equivalent of the Chinese NCLEX in order to work as a nurse in China. She is also a nurse but cannot work as a nurse in China. You might look at the website for International SOS to see if they have any positions in Shanghai that might interest you. All of the nurses at the clinic we go to are Chinese. The only other thing I could think of is trying to find work for an international company looking for an occupational nurse, I don't know if the rules would be the same. I don't have any idea what the pay would be.
If you are going to be living in Shanghai for a long time it might be worth looking into getting credentials in China. There are a few teaching hospitals in the city I live in that allow a certain number of foreign students in each year. With Shanghai being a bigger city you might have more choices.
There are a couple of good expat websites... I think one is Shanghai expat, these sites have a lot of good info as well, you might post your question on there.
Good luck with your move to China! Shanghai is a great city! Living in China is a great adventure.

You don't want to be a nurse in China.
Chinese nurses get paid 70 USD a month on average.
If that doesn't shock you, then maybe their 30+ patients to 1 nurse ratio will.
Nurses in China quit all the time, rather move the US and become a nurse.
Nurses recieve little respect, and are still handmaidens to doctors, it's like the 1950s.
What's sad is how smart, dedicated, and their professional training is of the same standard as any nurse in the world, but they recieve no rewards.
So that should answer your question, don't be a nurse in China.
