If you already took another program several years ago (not related to nursing) and didn't do well in it even though you did extremely well in your high school prerequisites. So here's what happened: my friend got over 85% average in high school. She decided to study a cosmetology program at a college in Ontario. She quickly realized it wasn't what she wanted to do but continued until she graduated because she didn't want her parents to rub it in. Her parents were upset when she decided thats what she wanted to study and they believed she was making a huge mistake that she would later regret. Anyway, she said that she had some descent marks, some good marks, and some awful ones, and her overall average was below a B. She sort of graduated in '07. I say sort of because she didn't bother to complete her placement that was required for graduation. She's now certain that she wants to be a nurse. Is there any hope for her?

I did a certificate in Art & Design before I transferred into Nursing, and I wasn't a stellar art student.

When I was applying into the BSN program, they told me they would try to accept me however they could.

YES - accepting me as a transfer student using my existing GPA was an option, but my GPA was too low (but higher than their "way too low" GPA of

They have a variety of rabbits in their hats. Get her in touch with an academic advisor.

I agree with this; even though it may say what is "required" for certain applicants under a certain criteria, sometimes they will make adjustments or consider an alternative option. In this case, I also advise that your friend contact the admission officers for more information specific to her case.

They may want to look at her Post-Secondary marks (because she will be applying as a non-seondary school applicant with post-secondary education), but may consider the decision based solely on her high school marks, but only if she has the pre-req courses and above the minimum average grade required to apply. If she doesn't have all the pre-reqs, I suggest she gets them either by upgrading classes or she could do what I did and take a one year program - Pre Health Science to get ALL the necessary courses to get in as a bridge to the Nursing program. Many Universities work closely with Colleges that offer the Pre-Health option, and favour people who apply with the program.

I have applied myself into the Western/Fanshawe Collaborative Nursing program and hope to get in for fall 2011.

Good luck to your friend; I'm sure she will find a way to get to where she wants to be! :)

Does that mean western doesn't care about diplomas from colleges??? only degrees? And do you mean ryerson and york don't care about your previous secondary as long as they are not related to nursing?

*by the way, she actually took Esthetician, not cosmetology... not sure if that makes a difference.

Sorry, didn't visit the forum for a long time. If it is still relevant:

Ryerson and York care about your previous degrees, but for the 4 year program they look at your high school GPA to make their decision, as well as on your resume and what you have been up to during your years after high school. Western doesn't care about any of these. If you have any degree after high school then they will take into account only the GPA from your degree, and not your high school. For me it was an issue since, I had very good grades at high school, but in the university I was studying full time and working full time, so my grades weren't good. Since Western doesn't ask for a resume, they didn't care about the good career I had, only the bad grades.

Her best option would be to take a pre-health course, they prefer this if you have been out of high school for more than 2 years.

This way she can get a refresher and get her grades up, and a better chance of getting in.

Hi,

Definitely get in touch with an academic advisor.

I have learned through my application process that all colleges and universities in Ontario wand full academic disclosure. So if you’ve taken a course, they want to know about it, complete or not. I had marks in high school that actually did get me accepted to Nursing, but I changed my mind at the last minute. I graduated University with a BA. Because I didn’t do as well as I could have, my marks were no longer adequate for entry into university for Nursing. Instead I’m doing the RPN program at college.

Hope that helps.

:)

Sorry they didn't care. It's not a nice feeling, I know. Like your hard work doesn't mean anything. I hope you have found a good alternative and one that makes you happy.
