Hello everyone!

I am an LVN that is about to complete my LVN to BSN bridge program this May. My employer asked that after I got my RN license would I be able to continue to work as an LVN until she finds a replacement for me.

I've always heard a myth that once you advance your nursing degree you can never work at the lower level title again. Meaning, after I receive an RN license I will not be able to use my LVN title again.

Is this true? I live in Texas if the state means anything.

i have both lpn and rn licenses active so i can work either license in my state of new jersey. i heard from people posting here that a lot of states don't let you have both licenses that they automatically take the lower license away. maybe you can ask texas board of nursing to be really sure?

here you go:

can lvns who also hold licenses as rns still work as vocational nurses?

there is nothing preventing licensed registered nurses from working in the capacity of licensed vocational nurses, however, when working as an lvn, they must stay within the parameters of their scope of practice. exception: in the event of an emergency, the lvn would be expected to function at the highest level of their education (i.e. professional nurse) and their performance should reflect professional judgment inherent in that role.

What you can and can not do in this respect depends upon the state where you live and work. In those states that allow one to work with either license, it would also depend upon an employer being willing to hire you under the "other" circumstance.

Your employer could damned well pay you as an RN until she replaces you. You agree to that and you'll never be replaced - she's got an RN at LPN pay as long as she drags her feet about finding a replacement. And in this market she can, easily.

several people on my floor have already completed their RN program but are still working as a LPN. Technically, they can start working with their temp RN license but they'd prefer to wait till they pass the board or find another job.

so answer to ur question is yes, and it is very common.

Depends on what your state BON allows. So the best one to answer your question is the Texas BON.

If it is allowed in Texas...what you want to do is up to you. I would suggest that even if you are willing to settle for less pay that you ask your manager to change your job description to "RN". That way you'd start accruing RN experience...whereas if you stayed as a LVN in the job you wouldn't technically gain RN experience.

Best of luck whatever you decide.
