I took and passed my NCLEX this past January. To be honest, all I did was Kaplan QBank questions and scanned over a Kaplan course book my school provided. My exam was basically over everything I didn't study and things I've never heard of.

These are some tips I remember from my NCLEX instructor:

1. Airway, breathing, circulation. Remember priorities.

2. NCLEX doesn't care about past. If you get a patient, you treat their present issue not a past history.

3. Review what nurses can delegate and expect from other workers.

4. Therapeutic communication - no "why" questions or anything offensive.

5. Study the suffixes of medications, chances are that you will see some you never heard of before, so if you can know the general suffixes of some, then maybe you'll have an idea of what the medication does.

6. Doesn't hurt to restudy cultures, lab values, vital sign ranges, nutrition, etc.

7. Do NOT read too much into a question, don't add "if"s or assumptions, take what is given to you and don't make it too complicated.

8. Answer what the question is asking, they can tell you whatever they want but know what they want.

After taking the NCLEX you will probably forget everything, thats what I have off the top of my head. Good luck and don't rush through the exam. If your questions are hard, then you're doing good. If your questions are easy, then maybe you need to bump up your game. When I left after my exam I went home and cried because I seriously thought I failed it, the questions were very hard. I hope you pass!

BTW, I understand you must be pretty nervous but cramming won't help you at all.

Best advice I can give, study test taking skills.

You've done the studying. The other thing to think of is yourself. I recommend you put the books away about noon the day before the test. There's really nothing you're going to learn in the last 24 hours that you didn't learn in the previous weeks/months of studying. Now's the time to work on yourself so you are rested and at your peak for the test.

Have a relaxing evening at home and a good supper. Nothing huge or heavy but more than three carrot sticks with a glass of water. Forget your diet for a day. You'll need to be at your top energy wise. Get a good night's sleep and have a good breakfast. Once again, nothing real heavy or too light. Arrive at the testing center early so you don't feel rushed. Hopefully you will be as calm and centered as possible. When you start the test, just do it one question at a time. Don't worry about questions past or trying to keep score. The computer does that for you. If you start feeling tense, take a couple of deep cleansing breaths to get centered again. Good luck!

Honestly, at this point, if I were you, I'd put all the books, study guides, websites, and anything else NCLEX related away. Take some time to relax, and don't even allow yourself to THINK about anything NCLEX related. Do something fun with the kids, your family or friends......SOMEthing - ANYTHING to forget about the test.

Somebody else already gave you great NCLEX test tips, but I have a couple more to offer. Remember that everything on the NCLEX happens in this fictional NCLEX hospital where it's never short-staffed, every supply imaginable is always at your fingertips, and everything is just perfect. (In other words, you aren't in Kansas anymore, Dorothy! LOL)

Ignore the clock and just concentrate on the one question in front of you at that very moment. Read the questions and all answers before you answer. Make sure you know exactly what they're really asking, and don't add to the scenario.

One of the best tips my professors gave us was never second guess yourself. If you put an answer, do not go back and change it. Trust your first instincts - unless you know for an absolute FACT that the first answer is wrong.

Oh, and there's a really easy way to get a pretty close estimate of heart rate from EKG readings. 300-150-100-75-60. Find an R wave on the line of a big box, and count the "big lines" until the next R wave. If there's only one big box between the R waves, the rate is 300. If there are 2 big boxes between the R waves, the rate is 150, and so on. If you can find 2 successive R waves that are both on a "big line," the count will be more accurate. Even if you can't find 2 successive R waves on a big line, it'll still give you a rough estimate of the rate.

Relax, and good luck!
