Hi Karen! I live in WNY too!!
Unfortunately, I can't answer your question, but I came on here to ask the same thing. I am going back to school this fall for my ADN, and I am trying to get an idea of what to expect $$ wise around here after the fact. There is no way to gage it compared to NYC, so if anyone is from around here and reads this, I sure hope they wouldn't mind giving us some insight/experience.
Take care!!
I don't know what part of WNY you are from. I am from Southwestern Chautauqua county. I have heard in this area RN's start at about $21-23 hr. I have also heard that Erie, Pa starts at about $31/hr. This is coming from current Rn's that I have met. I think there was a post around here someplace about wages in the Rochester area as well.
edit to add: a few I spoke to are now in home health and said they make more than that.

Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure what to expect pay wise since the ads in the paper never give a salary. Like I said, I have small kids, a DH and the typical family expenses so adding another thing like a student loan was a little scarey especially since I wasn't sure what kind of money I could make after I graduate. KWIM?

Since you said you are going "back to school" I take it you are an older student? How old if you don't mind me asking. I'm turning 37 and will starting (hopefully if all goes the right way) in Fall 2008. I posted a message to see how many of us thirty somethings there were out there and I was really surprised to see how many there actually are. Even a couple of people in their forties replied so now I don't feel so bad about going back at my age.
Our cutoff is in Feb for the fall semester. They only start in the fall. So I need to complete Chem this semester and get a good gpa in order to hopefully make the cut. Otherwise I have to wait another full year.
I am taking 16 credits and one chemistry help class for 0 credits (just in case!) this semester. With 3 kids (and 8 year old, 3 year old and 8 month old) a husband, a house and a job (p/t) this should be a lot of fun!
Can't wait to start though!!
Lancaster is up by Buffalo right? I live in Jamestown.

Kim, sounds like you have a full plate as well.... it is hard, but I am hoping it will all be worth it at the end. I am taking about 7.5 credits hrs this semester and getting ready to apply by Feb for the Fall '08 program. I currently have an associates in medical assisting (as well as about 4 years of OB/GYN and urology experience) under my belt, so I am hoping that will help me out. I wish I would've just done this 10 years ago.... kinda stinks to look back now, but hey, it's never too late!!
Yep. Lancaster is on the outskirts of Buffalo.

I live in WNY and will have an ADN at graduation. Can anyone tell me about what the starting pay is? Doc office? Hospital? Nursing home? Also, is there that much of a pay difference for ADN/BSN degrees? I am a little on the older side so I would prefer to get an ADN first and begin working for a year to get my feet wet then consider a BSN but if the pay isn't that much of a difference (and I do not think I want to go into Management) then I would consider just keeping myself w/ADN. Thanks and I hope I am not sounding greedy (money wise) but this is a huge move for me, I have a husband and kids so I will have to take out some loans to help pay for this, so the last thing I need is to leave my current job (in an office making decent money and benefits) only to find out that I am going to create debt and not be making much more if I stayed in my current job. KWIM?
Not to mention my fear of failure but I won't go there right now.........
