Calling all Truman College Nursing Students

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi,

Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.

1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?

2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?

3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.

*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them. :specs:

Thanks

I was accepted for Fall 09 and start on the 24th of this month!!! I am so excited, well anyway, my GPA is 3.2 I believe but I already have an associates degree from another city college and received all A's in Anatomy 226 and 227 as well as Chem 121, Bio 121 and I received a B in Micro 233. I received a 94 on the compass exam. I dont know if having completed all other required courses before the beginning of the program increased my chances at all but you never know. This year they started a ranking system, it is listed on their website and all of the ways of which points can be obtained are listed as well. This past year when I applied, this did not exist. If you met minimum requirements you are eligible to enter the lottery and after an initial weed out of the students they definetly wanted, they did a lottery to choose the rest.

Just a side note-make sure that you have really good insurance because all of the health requirements ended up costing me 1400 dollars!! My insurance only covers preventive care!!! I am so angry at myself because of this. I will be happy to answer any questions you have and good luck!!

Hi, I just got accepted into the program and start in the Fall. They have used a lottery system for as long as I know and used one this last session that I got into. The information about the ranking system and points is ALL NEW for next year. This was not the case when I applied in January, so the fact that they are using a ranking system now makes me think that they discontinued the lottery, but Im not sure. My GPA was 3.2 and I got a 95 on the compass and all A's in all of the pre-requisite and co-requisite classes and I already have an associates from the city colleges in Arts with Honors. I have a friend that has a 2.8 GPA got an 84 on the compass so she was required to sign up for reading 126 and got all C's in the pre and co-requisites and got in as well, I think that was due to the lottery though. I think that that lottery sucks and am glad they started a ranking system. Why dont you buy the Fundamentals book and start reading it to get a head start? I already bought about $600 worth of the books required off of Amazon and that was only half of them by the way, because I want to get ahead of the game for the Fall! I completely understand you there! I just finished my Micro and A&P II class today and am sooo happy to be off for the summer!!! Are you going to apply for Fall 10??

How did you obtain the ISBN #'s to purchase on Amazon? 2 bundles of the books were in cardboard boxes and I couldn't see the ISBN #'s. Did the bookstore supply them for you?

No, you do not need the ISBN #s. All I did was search for the books and purchased the latest edition available, the names of the book and authors were given to us at orientation so they were pretty easy to find. How much is the book store selling the bundles for??

It's about $1000.00 for them all not including the suggested study books/guides. I was able to get some books from my friend who graduated from Truman about 2 years ago (he said it's a great program!) but I know the edition number has changed so I won't be able to use them. How much was your total for all the books, and does Amazon sell them in the bundles or did you have to purchase them all seperately? Gosh, can you believe we're only 1 week away from starting?

I think I paid about the same actually. I ordered them all seperately but I also bought the manual of lab and diagnostic tests and a couple other non required books because I read on here that I would need them!!! I also bought the Saunders NCLEX book because it comes highly recommended and it is broken down into sections so when we are covering a certain topic in class you can go to your Saunders book and everything that you will really need to know is summarized right there! Its really neat actually. I also ordered a digital recorder and a PDA loaded with tons of nursing programs for clinicals!! I may have gone a bit overboard but I prefer to be over prepared then under. Did you receive a letter demanding 290 more dollars for testing?? This is starting to get really expensive.........

I've not received anything asking for additional money yet, when did you get the letter? I'll have to go back and look at my receipt to see what the total charges where initially, could it have been on the initial bill? You're not kidding that it's getting expensive! I took on a part-time job to help me out with books and last minute expenses but I don't think I'll be quitting that job anytime soon.

I already have a recorder, I'm hoping our instructor is ok with allowing us to record lectures.

By the way, I don't thing you've gone overboard, my friend actually told me to get a palm pilot so that I could have all the drug names handy at any given time. By the way, he mentioned that Murphy is supposed to be a great instructor, especially with clinicals, so to try to get her for next semester. He also said that Ms. Kipnis was a great choice for 1st semester.

I received the letter a wekk ago. It said that all incoming Nursing students for Fall 09 were required to pay $290 before the 24th of this month for Testing. It said that we would be given four tests a year, i guess to prepare for the NCLEX and that it was a mandatory fee that was discussed in orientation, which I dont recall. If you did not receive a letter I would call the nursing office because I work with someone who got into the program as well and she received her letter the same day I did. I am going to go in the morning and pay it!
