Call offs. I love getting the phone call, hate getting the paycheck

Published

It's feast or famine right now in OB. I was put on standby last Thursday, sent home after 4 hours Tuesday, put on standby last night, and cancelled altogether tonight (the upside is I'm enjoying a glass of wine right now). When that phone rings at 1700, I know it can only be work calling to tell me not to come in. It's always a "Yay! Oh, wait. Crap."

I LOVE being able to stay home with my family in the evening, and it's always extra nice to be mentally preparing to leave, and then get this gift of being able to stay home. But DANG, it's hard when the paycheck comes.

I REALLY need to win the lottery.

But I agree, it is hard to say NO to a day off...............

I wish I'd be given that chance to say NO to it. I've only been called off once...just to be called back a couple hours later asking if I could possibly come in. Of course, I went in, being young and green and eager...and most importantly, still in my scrubs.

Funeral detail????

Military honor guard that provides the ceremony for deceased veterans. You should have seen the cameras clicking, many I am sure, to get pictures of the female soldier pall bearers. We developed sick dispositions to go along with our camaraderie. Thus, calling each other up on the phone, to wonder out loud if we would be getting a detail when we saw the obit of a former serviceman.

In Texas at least, if a person who is listed as a full time employee is scheduled for less than 32 hours, they can claim unemployment. At least that's the way it is on "normal" jobs. My former employer learned that lesson the hard way. I'm not sure of the policy for health care workers.

Personally, I have a couple of hundred hours of PTO built up. I wish I WOULD get called off occasionally.

This is a naive viewpoint in today's world. I work in an "at will employment" state. I have a job as long as it is the will of the employer. The employer can discharge me, dissolve our relationship at any time, for any or no reason...if that is their will. Likewise, I may quit at anytime for any or no reason.quote]

I see your point, but I still disagree... if you've made the commitment to be at work on the days you've been scheduled for, they should not be consistently calling you off. If they are, you don't have the option to pick up another job to supplement your decreased income, because you have already committed your time to that job. With that said, of course every job has it's pros and cons and I'm just so thankful to be employed (and my employer does not do this anyway). :) Just on principle... I don't think it's ok.
