I'm just ranting but tonight while at work there was a lazy CNA who kept disappearing from her patients. So I was taking care of my patients and hers while she did only GOD knows what. 30 minutes before our shift ended one of her patients light kept going off. I literally watched this cna ignore the patient, put her purse on, and stand by the time clock waiting to clock out. This irritated me because she was obviously neglecting her. So I assisted the patient but kept thinking why is she a cna if the only thing she keeps doing is disappearing and not tending to her patients. (Sorry for the long post. I just felt like venting)

I agree, just keep a eye on it. If it keeps happening thenI would report it. It is not fair to the other CNAs and certainly not fair to the residents if a CNA is not going to do her job. It would be better if they could get someone else in that spot that really cared about their job, and had respect for their co workers. On the other hand if this was the first time you have seen this happen then I would not jump the gun so fast. Maybe she was not having a good night, and she was feeling ill or something. Like you said you were not sure where she was. Not saying it was right it ignore the light, but if she was feeling ill or something she probably could not wait to get home and crawl into bed.

It doesn't happen often in my workplace I admit but when my partner(we work in pairs) disappeared for 45 mins I reported her.

Since the CNA job often pays a higher hourly wage than retail or fast food in many cities, I assume your lazy coworker is in it for the paycheck and nothing more.
It really bothered me. I was thinking that if the patient was a relative of mine and I witnessed what the cna was doing, I would go off and speak with her supervisor

I would report it to the charge nurse and if it keeps happening to the don. That's not right to you and your fellow care workers. But it really isn't right to the residents, that is a form of abuse.
