I was just wondering... How is the nurse/pt mandated ratios working for you? Did you lose a lot of your ancillary staff, CNA's, Techs and LPN's due to the staffing requirements? How is your hospital meeting the requirements, ie..are they doing agency vrs traveling nurses? I am just curious how they are doing what 49 other state hospitals are saying it is impossible to do. Thanks in advance.

Our hospital IS meeting the ratios, but support staff is gradually falling to the wayside. 34 bed unit, acute telemetry. We are acutally better than the ratios which state 5 pts to a nurse. We run 3-4 patients. 2 techs for the floor during the day, and primary care at night.

We never used much ancillary support staff anyways (other than unit clerks and lab people, and they haven't been cut). We do use a lot of agency and travel nurses. It's great. I've been able to be a local traveller thanks to the ratios (I take travel assignments in my area, so I don't actually have to move or anything). I'll probably be applying to an agency soon.

We haven't lost any ancillary staff. In fact, we have more staff as if we have 6 patients, we have to have 2 nurses. 5:1 ratio ya know.
We have CNA's and ward clerks.
It has been a bit hard on the nurses though - we live in a rural area and if someone is sick or takes a vacation, it is difficult to cover their shift. Also we have some nurses out on leave (knee replacement, infection).
Let's not even talk about OB coverage:rolleyes:
