California RN Endorsement - Regents Graduate

I am an RN with licenses in 2 states.

I graduated from Regents College in 1998.

I have had a Temporary License in California (which just expired).

Sent in my transcripts, and they were suppose to send me my permanent license.

There were new regulations in California in 2003, which wouldn't allow Regent's Graduates to gain licensure.

From what I was told, I am suppose to be grandfathered in, since the regulations were set in place several years after I graduated.

I was told this by the Regents State Board Team, and was also told by someone who worked at the California State Boards office, a little over 2 years ago.

However, they acknowledge that the regulations were set in place in 2003, but they have not issued my permanent license, and are waiting for approval/disapproval from the "Executive Officer".

Help!!!!

Any suggestions, to what I may be able to do?

Hey DaveyRN, Maybe you should post this thread in the distance learning forum to get more responses there are lots of Excelsior College students there would could possibly help you. Good luck with getting your California License. :)

When you say "one of our nurses endorsed in after only 1 year of experience as an RN". Do you mean, she graduated from "Regents College" (now Excelsior University), and endorsed into California??

The nurse worked with me at a SNF here in Las Vegas. He graduated from Excelsior in 09. took the boards in Nevada. After 1 year he applied to CA BON for endorsement and was licsensed. Let me know how it goes. I may want to go back someday.:nurse:

Yes, basically the state of CA has banned anyone with an Excelsior degree (or affiliates) from a certain year, so after Dec. 2003, they will not be able to get their RN license. It doesn't matter under which name Excelsior had before. It's the paper trail from whoever and whenever Excelsior changed names. It was only grandfathered prior to 12/2003.

I know as several of my friends are getting stuck to come back to CA, without having to go back to school under a CA approved program, meaning having to study from scratch after a few years of working outside of CA. It's the initial licensing that hurts them. You may be able to appeal your case since you're in the group prior to 2003, but some of my friends lost their appeal process and they were from 1998 to 2001.

No program in CA will accept you as you already hold a RN license. Try the distance forum to see if you can get better answers.

Wow, someone got real lucky that he was able to licensed from CA with Excelsior paperwork. That's a first that I've heard of. Good for him!

Hola Cubanita!

Just wanted to let you know, that I was finally issued a permanent RN license in California.

It was issued in March.

It was a long haul, but I finally received it.

Thank God.

Hopefully, this will give hope to the people who have had trouble with getting their California RN License.

It took me about 5-6 months of going back and forth with them.

Persistance may have been the key.

Wow, congrats to you, Davey! I'm going to tell my sister-in-law, but then again, she's outside of your degree year of completion..2007. Yes, you got a lucky person to look over your records as the few others I (we) know still got declined, but it's okay, they decided to stay where they are at to stay with family or friends.

I think that in some circumstances, you have to have the right person reviewing your file. But in my case, it went up to the top banana (from what they told me).

I reminded them (cut/pasted) what was on their web page regarding Regents/Excelsior.

And according to their own web page, I would be grandfathered in.

I graduated in the 90's, and this should have been taken care of, long before it actually was.

However, I must say, that I am happy that I was issued my license, and that it is all over with. Very stressful & frustrating to say the least.

I posted a while back, that I was finally issued my California RN license.

Didn't hear back from you.

It was a long haul, but they finally issued me my license.

Ugh!

Very stressful...but all done :)
