California LVN has decided to become a certified interpreter

Published

I have decided to go back to school to become a certified medical interpreter. I am no longer happy working as a nurse. I still want to stay in the medical field though. I feel this would be a great business venture. I am always being asked to translate at work and a Spanish speaking nurse is like gold here in Cali. The issue is that I don't get paid to do it. It's part of my job. I speak more Spanish at work than I do at home. So I might as well get compensated.

I agree!! I think you are making a great decision. I recently started working as an classroom nurse in an elementary school with students who have pretty complex medical needs. Many are from Spanish speaking homes and the teachers are constantly securing a translator for IEP meetings, parent conferences and medical updates. I think you will have many doors open to you! All the best!!

I would like to bump this post. :) Any CMI available to talk about their experience? Thanks!!!
