California Licensing after NCLEX results

Published

I am hoping someone can help me with this. After checking on the forum and the bvnpt.com website, I could not find the answer.

Is it possible, after receiving NCLEX results that you've passed to drive to Sacramento and pick up your license? I really don't want to wait another month to get a license, after graduating in July.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Well, come to find out, all my friends have driven up to Sacramento and have a tempory license :( This is a learning experience. I should have called the board and asked, but the phone line was busy.

Everyone has asked my why I didn't do that.......... And now they are working and making money while I sit here and wait for I don't know how long. I mailed my check in on October 28th, and it still hasn't been cashed:(

Just because someone has driven up to Sacramento does not guarantee that they are going to get a temporary license as well. And temporary licenses do expire and not all employers will accept a temporary license either. And how many friends?

Permanent licenses cannot be picked up at the Bureau since they are not printed in CA, but out of state.

You are still able to drive there if you wish. But that will not get you the permanent license.

I have had five friends go up and get temporary licenses while they wait for the permanent one to come in. None of them have had a problem getting them, they said it took about 10 minutes altogether. I did have one friend find out after she sent in her money that she could cancel her check, appear in person, and pick it up, which she did. She did phone them first so that she knew for sure that it would be possible.

I called but it was too late as they had already cashed my check. The nursing director of the LTC I was hired at offered to drive me up to pick up the temporary license. She said thats what she does for new nurses so others have done it also.

CA does not have a BON, they have two very separate depts that handle the RNs and one for the LVNs.

The issue again is that the license is not even manufactured in CA, but in Ohio if I remember correctly. So there is no way for it to be picked up at their office.

There is no advice to give, one needs to wait for it to be sent to them in the mail. Especially if it is the LVN license, they handle things for that completely different than any other state.

This is something that is very well known in CA about how these things are handled. And there is not any way to change any of it.

Just to help clarify who governs Nursing Practice (RN/LVN) in CA....The [state] Department of Consumer Affairs contains the CA Board of Registered Nursing and the Bureau of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. The California Department of Health Care Services, Aide and Technician Certification Section governs the practice of Nursing Assistants.

Only if you want to know...

There is also no fee that can be submitted for a temporary license with the Bureau if you look at the website for them.

And if it was something that was readily available, then this is something that should have been shared by your school and I suspect that it was not. If every student took the drive to Sacramento, then it would be months for anyone to get their scores in the first place. And everyone would just be given a temporary license in the first place.

Very aware of how things are done. There is no longer a Board for the Vocational Nurses, it was changed on July 1 of this year to a Bureau directly under the Dept of Consumer Affairs.

The Bureau was previously called a Board and that is no longer their name.

Hi Suzanne 4! Could you explain to me the difference between a board vs. a bureau? Is the Bureau of Vocational Nursing still primarily the same as when it was a board?
