California Furnishing License

Hi fellow NPs!

I'm a new NP graduate and just accepted a job in California. I'm now in the process of applying for my CA furnishing license. For those with experience, do you know how long it takes to get the license once the BRN has received your application, fee, and verification of pharmacology course form?

Also under "Key Points" for the verification form, it says the pharmacology course must include:

• The furnishing responsibility for Schedule II, III, IV, V controlled substances that are to be furnished with a patient-specific protocol in compliance with Health and Safety Code section 11000 for NPs.

• The furnishing responsibility for Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substances that are to be furnished with a patient specific protocol in compliance with Health and Safety Code 11056 for CNMs.

• The Pharmacy Rules and Regulations for NPs and CNMs, Health & Safety Codes and OBRA 1990 Section 483-40, Federal Register.

I've looked at my pharmacology course objectives and I can't recall if we specifically discussed these three points in lecture. Our course objectives were also not as specific as the requirements listed on the Furnishing license form. If, for some reason, my pharm course doesn't meet these requirements, does that mean I can never get a CA furnishing license? I looked at this link for answers, (http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-i-25.pdf). However, it didn't really address this specific issue. Appreciate your help!

Can anyone help with this California furnishing question. I completed advanced pharm 12/29/2011, graduated 12/12, and have been working in Oregon and Idaho as an NP since 03/2103. Technically, I completed pharm over 5 years ago and only have 4.5 years of work experience, will my furnishing license be approved or will I have to retake pharm or work for another 6 months and apply again? My California RN license came through last month but my graduate transcripts were lost so I had to resend and was told it would take 4-6 weeks to process the mail once they received my new transcripts. Ugh. The people that answer the phone are not able to answer any questions! Just trying to decide if I should just work as an RN or wait a few more weeks. Thanks

That's tough. When you call the BRN, ask for who is handling your case. My understanding is that there are specific BRN employees who look into individual cases. You do miss the 5 years mark for previous NP employment that will make you eligible for a CA NPF license and your Pharm class is more than 5 years old which also precludes you from qualifying for a CA NPF. Only the BRN can tell you what the next steps are. Some people do send the applications anyway including the fee and take the risk of not getting approved and having an official statement from the BRN on how you would need to remediate in order to qualify...that's an option.

Would be able to amend your application with proof of completing a new course or whatever was missing without having to pay again?

I took advanced pharmacology at WGU; I'm not sure it meets the requirements. I've seen a 45 hour course mentioned here https://www.npcourses.com/45-hour-advanced-pharmacology-course/ . Wondering if I should risk rejection or take this course before applying for furnishing.
