Hi all-First time posting here. We are military and are probably moving this summer to California. I am a RN and have worked in ER's for 15yrs. What basic qualifications do the Cal. ER RN's need or is it hospital to hospital? Any help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance. I obviously have ACLS and PALS. I'm trying to knock out any other things I may need prior to moving.

TNCC and ENPC are always good to have. They may not be necessary but will make you a little more employable, esp in a trauma center.
CATN is another one that is a nice to have, but very few people bother with it. It is trauma specific.
As long as you have your basics (ACLS and PALS) the hospitals will normally put you through the others as time permits.

ACLS and PALS is fine they are so short staffed out here in California it is ridiculous. I would work as a traveling nurse out here if I was you. I know travelers who have been at the same hospitals for over 5 years.
Thanks to both of you for responding. I appreciate the input. So, neither of you mentioned CEN. I guess that's not required either? Thanks again.

An Rn with 15 yrs exp. is a very valuable person...I know in central Cali, any hospital would hire you on the spot! :)

Its funny you should mention this, I have worked in Emergency Rooms in several different states and CEN was never required or even given a consideration....I always wondered why.

In my experience here in CA, it's hospital to hospital. ACLS is the main one (at the hospital I work at, PALS is not required, but I think it's changing now...hopefully). At my hospital, if you have CEN you get paid a little more. I would suggest travel nursing. We're so short-staffed, you can pretty much get a job anywhere and stay as long as you want. We have travel nurses that have been here for years (same hospital). You get your housing stipend, insurance, and more money. Just check with the ER you're applying to and find out what their requirements are. Good luck!
