As I was browsing a while ago in the CA BON, I saw that they do require the foreign nurse to pass TOEFL. Suzzanne, I dont want to be rude but may i just ask you where did u get this info? could you please send me the link regarding this one because as far as i know, this rule does not exist. tnx..

Ca does not require english test for Filipinoes. they didnt ask me when i applied.they even sent me an interim permit. they will only ask if the mode of teaching and the exam isnt in english. our philippine national board exam is written in english. our nursing subjects are tought in english. english is our second language. and CA BON knows it.

ok i can not apply for an interim permit but can i have my NM license endorsed to CA if i complete all of the requirements needed?

You will only receive an actual license from CA after you have given them a SSN#. And you must also have a Visa Screen Certificate to get thru the immigration requirement.

leilah75, what are the requirements that they asked you to pass? are you sure that TOEFL or IELTS is not needed? Why is it that in the CA BON, it is written there that TOEFL is one of their requirements?

When I applied for the Interim permit ( temporary nsg license), they required me to submit the TOEFL. but when you apply for the CA licensure, they don't require the English exams, in my own understanding, they know you will need to pass and submit the English exams for the Visa Screen Certificate.

i am a philippine graduate nurse and CA BON didnt require me ielts or toefl. i thought they will ask me about it when i applied for interim permit but they didnt, they issued an interim permit 2 weeks after my application got approved.

leilah75, i assume that you have an immigrant status that is why CA BON does not require you to have the ielts or toefl exam.

Immigration status has nothing to do with it.

THOUSANDS of foreign-educated nurses have applied already to CA thru the YEARS, whether it be Initial Licensure or Endorsement and TOEFL is only needed for Interim Permits and those who apply for IP are those who migrated using the CGFNS Certificate for their Visa Screen. All NCLEX passers are not allowed to be given IPs.

A nurse will have to take either the TOEFL or IELTS to complete their req'ts for Visa Screen Certification, w/c is needed to get a greencard for those who are non-immigrants but as far as CA BRN is concern only those who seeks IP are mandated to give them a passing TOEFL result.

From my experience, when I applied for an IP last year CA BRN didn't asked me of my passing English score. What they've asked me for requirement was my license in PI and my IP application was approved...

Then that makes the point even better. :clown: It seems that based on the above poster's exp. TOEFL isn't even needed even for IP.

But for me, I submitted my Toefl results because that is what the instructions said. By the way, when I applied for Interim Permit, I already have my Visa Screen Certificate. It did not matter to me since I have all the necessary requirements at hand.

This is interesting.

it is instructed and we know that. i sent my application papers, checked the request for interim permit, paid appropriate fees, i am about to schedule an ielts or toefl exam if they will require me to do it. but the board didnt ask me to submit any and sent me my IP 2 weeks later after the application has been approved.

But if you are in the US and on a visa to work, it means that you took the CGFNS exam, and that included the basic english requirement.

If the nurse is not writing the CGFNS exam, then the IP is a moot point; as they would not have a visa to work with before taking and passing of the NCLEX exam, which the original poster was planning to do. VSC requires that you pass either the NCLEX-RN or the CGFNS exam to get the green card.
