Calhoun CC Nursing Program

U.S.A. Alabama

Published

Hi all! I am applying to the Nursing Program at Calhoun in a year, and am wondering how many points are typically needed to be accepted into the program. I have also heard that they are talking about using an entrance exam instead of the point system. Is there any truth to that? As of now, I have taken all but Bio 202 and Micro for the program. I am hoping to just have the Nursing classes left when I go into it. I have a 3.5 GPA right now and am hoping to make at LEAST B's in my next two Bio classes. If anyone knows the answers it would be really helpful. THANKS!!

SheltonBri,

I found this on another thread. Hope it helps. Good luck!!

"I don't know what the cut off was for the LPN program, but for the ADN evening, the letter said it was 167; for the daytime it was 153. Hope that gives everyone some information."

They have such a large number of applicants that I would shoot for A's!! I have heard they are switching to an entrance exam, but it also depends on how the latest round of graduates do on the NCLEX. Apparently, scores aren't good with the last passing class and the State BON is looking to come in and take over the program curriculum. And that is from a current nursing student's mouth!

As far as points, it changes every year, and I don't rememeber what it was for LPN/RN when I entered in 2006. I have heard rumors of the entrance exam, but dont know any truth too it. As for NCLEX scores, I just graduated in May, and we had 197 graduates, 89 of us have taken NCLEX thus far, and 87 have passed, so were kicking butt! They really changed alot of things in our last semester, and have tried to improve the program, I think alot of the kinks have been worked out and I see Calhoun's program really excelling.

I enrolled in the RN program in fall of 2007 along with Jamie2887, and just graduated this past May. I myself had 199 out of 200 points. I don't recall exact figures, but many people I knew in the program told me they had as low as 160-something points. I don't remember anyone saying they had much lower than that.

When I enrolled in the program, my understanding was that there was no specific threshold of points that was required; the way it worked is that they took in the top X number of people who had the highest number of points. In other words, everyone with 200 points had first priority, everyone with 199 points had second priority, and so on down the line until all available spaces in the program were full.

That criteria may of course be changing this year or anytime in the future.

I hope this makes sense. Good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free.

I got in this year with around 180 points.

best wishes!!

the points system seems to be different at every community college?
