Simmons University School of Nursing FNP online program
Just a heads up about Simmons for those of you considering it. I applied and was accepted. For the price you pay for tuition, they put a large amount of emphasis on research, lit reviews, writing papers and so forth. I ended up switching to a local brick and mortar school that cost less and is actually teaching me applicable skills for FNP. Research Methods, Scholarly Inquiry I & II and Family Theory are all heavily focused on writing papers and research. It's not an easy program, and I had quite a few of my classmates along with myself who chose to transfer to other schools after our first semester. Best of luck to you all!!

Starting a new Job
I have been a RN for a little over a year and my first job was at a state VA home as a RN, so my experience is a mixture of mgmt and med-surg. I was hired to work in a small 15 bed ED and 10 bed observation unit. I start my first shift in the ER on Friday. I know I can do this and I'm excited, I just feel like I'm going to be a bit behind the curve, coming from a LTC environment, but I'm super excited that the director hired me, so now I need to show her that she didn't make a mistake. Any tips, hints, or helpful insights to calm my anxiety about the transition.

Calhoun Community College Fall 2012
I was in a group that volunteered for night clinicals because I work full time and I hate wasting a saturday when I can just be exhausted through the week and get it done.

Clinical rotations vary, I've always been at HH and I've got to North Alabama Regional & Decatur General West for Psych. You don't really have any say on the day/time/location of your clinicals and for the most part, they tend to not be very accommodating. Clinical rotations will gradually get longer each semester. For example, this is my 3rd semester doing evening nights, last semester it was 5pm-10pm, this semester it's 5-11pm. If you are in the day class your clinicals will most likely be during the day. The only chance you will have a chance to give your opinion about where you want to be is when you turn in your choices for your preceptorship your last semester. Some semesters you will have a psych day on a Tuesday. Studying for HESI is difficult because you never really know whats going to be on the test. I primarily study out of these 2 books: HESI Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination, 3e (HESI Evolve Reach Comprehensive Review f/ NCLEX-RN Examination Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN® Examination, 5e (Saunders Comprehensive Review for Nclex-Rn You will also do module assignments that you will have to have in order to go to clinicals for the day, save all of your drug sheets in a binder, you will re-use them in later semesters.

You take the HESI at the end of every semester and it tests you on what you learned that semester and becomes cumulative. The teachers do not make this test, so there really is no way of knowing just what will be on it. Each semester, the amount it counts towards your grade increases. You will learn to "bank" you test grades & make as high as you can so that you can walk into HESI, make a 50 and still pass the class. In 202, which I'm in, it counts 30% of our grade.

You pay a testing fee per semester and it's around $100 that financial aid doesn't cover and you have to pay for youself.

You will take 102 in the Spring and you will reuse the Fundamentals of Nursing book & add in Linton's Med-Surg book. Both books are in the bundle. If you have the list of text books, you can go ahead & price them out on your own. Chegg.com is a good place to rent from. I think if you check your Space Email, there are a few people in there selling their books for Nursing, ones that didn't pass.

Here I am! At orientation, someone will talk to you about the books. They actually come as a bundle where you can get paperback books or e-books. I got paperback. The set of books is actually designed for the FT students and contains books for 102, 103, & 104. You will take 103 & 104 your first semester. There are 2 or three books you will need that aren't in the bundle that you will buy separately. We had to order ours because the bookstore ran out and I didn't get mine until after school had started. Be prepared that even though there are X numbers of students taking 104, the bookstore ALWAYS runs out of the things we need. Every semester. You will reference several books the first semester so the best bet is to buy the bundle. And do NOT sell your books at the end of the semester. You will need them again! Once you get past 104-Pharm, there will be Pharm questions on every test. All of my books I purchased through the school up until this semester. Since Maternity/Peds is only one semster, I bought my books off of Amazon & Ebay for much cheaper than the $500 the bookstore wanted. I did spend an arm & part of leg the first semester on everything. But I always wanted brand new books, I'm nerdy like that. Go ahead & try to get your uniforms because last year Landau had to back order the color. Parkway Scrubs has them too and they are nice than the ladies at the Uniform Corner on Governers.
