Dangerous and Demented: What Usually Happens?
Let the CNA's know especially the main staff who takes care of her= how much you appreciate what they have to deal with. It goes a long way. I have a resident who made a fast right hand hook 3 inches away from my face. I still get flashbacks. During hands on care he has to be held down to prevent from kicking and striking. The Ativan calms him down but sometimes doesn't work. We do not use restraints on him. The family comes regularly to visit and they know of his behaviors.

Ever wear ear plugs to deal with the never ending loud noise?
Any success stories with dementia patient who is very anxious with repeatitive verbalizations? Her trigger is she's afraid to be left alone and needs constant 1:1. As soon as you leave that is when her behavior starts, voicing " Help!... I'm afraid!......" " I'm gonna die!." I hear this for 7 out of the 8 hrs I'm at work. I tried ipod with her favorite music..and sorts of distractions. Blech, no luck. On Zyprexa and trazodone. PRN Ativan .5 works only for 2 hrs; the 1 mg made her too drowsy. Haldol did not work. Lexapro did not work. Help! lol

I work in ltc . My unit has become a psych unit mostly dementia related. I have 3 residents that yells intermittently ; they feed off each other. One in particular is inconsolable and prn meds .. psych consults..hospital stay..hasn't help at all. She is afraid to be left alone and cries/yells to get anyone's attention. I'm at my wits end and thinking of getting ear plugs !

How do you get thicker skin?
Glad to hear I'm not alone. I work in skilled LTC with no security like most LTC's. Tonight I dealt with an angry husband who has been in denial for some time regarding his wife's condition and continued decline. He was nasty; condescending and even a thick skin and kindness wasn't cutting it. After he was done being Mr Nasty scolded his wife for not wanting to eat. I lost it right there and tried to put him in his place. ( Before things escalated I already informed the Supervisor. I was left to handle this nut alone.) So tonight I went to the 24 hour store to try and decompress before going home and tomorrow going to join a gym. Something's got to give. This work is stealing my peace. And the stress is making me fat. The other night I had a family member charging towards the nursing station to TELL ME they're going to contact the state to report that her mother complained she was put to bed and was never dressed! (Requested to go to bed and yes she was dressed. She's also confused.) When I spoke with the resident with the daughter present she couldn't remember what she said. The daughter had a silent dumb moment- but continued to find another thing to complain about

Speaking foreign languages
There is no excuse whatsoever to speak in your native tounge while at work-giving a report-break room- etc.. People ought to know their place. It's pathetic that people have to resort to putting signs up just to remind/enforce employees! If people fear of being called racist-ignorant- when trying to address this issue how about someone of that foreign descent step up to say to their people "enough of that". I am a filipino. Although there aren't many of us at work- WE communicate in ENGLISH. No one should should tolerate having to listen us converse as if we're at home let alone give report in our dialect! Seriously?! We don't go to work to make friends. Say something and don't ignore it.:igtsyt:

Heartbroken. Ball was dropped BIG TIME. Advice?
Last year the father of my children went into respiratory distress while getting ready for work in the early hours of the morning. He was home alone at that time. He called 911. When they got to the house they found him on the floor and was not able to revived him. My guess then he had his wallet on him..id, etc..plus he was known to carry always cash. He was taken to a nearby e.d. then transferred to another e.d. We were not informed till early noon. The second e.d was trying to figure out his information. To this day I still wonder what happened to his wallet. Nothing is perfect. Sometimes we are left with questions and we hang on to them hoping in some way it would add light to the situation. Maybe an error was made somewhere and communications got lost along the way. I don't know.. all I know is that the world needs more love and peace. Namaste.

Positive TB & New Employment
I'm also a converter. New employment will require a cxr and if it's neg you'll be ok. They dont test me every year after that dt the skin reaction- red and itch like crazy. If you find another job explain to them your a converter and they'll just ask you for a cxr to put in in file.
