Cal State San Marcos, CSUSM, Accelerated, ABSN 2011

Published

Anyone planning on applying to the Spring 2011, CSUSM, accelerated ABSN program? Just wondering if there is anyone else out there:)

@Missnurselady,

So you do think working is possible during the program? And as for job prospects after the program, do you think there's been a problem for the new grads? Do any of you guys go on to the MSN program through extended learning?

Thanks for your input on how the program is so far!

i got in again to temecula ... this time for fall 2011! yay! this is actually my 2nd choice program so i'll see if any other offers come in. fingers crossed ... for those currently enrolled how do you like the clinicals?

Congrats mxmestiza! :nurse: Can I ask what your total points were? I want this semester over so I can have my points calculated!

Good luck with your 1st choice!

hi oaktown! according to the conversation i had with an advisor last month, i was in the low 30s i think. i tried looking on the website for their points (didn't even know they had a point system when i applied) so i can't even add them up right now and confirm. my gpa is somewhere around 3.6-3.7 and i got an 84 on my TEAS.

Congrats mxmestiza - for fall AND spring! I applied end of last year and was desperately hoping to get in for spring, but no go. Hearing the point totals for those accepted, I'm scared I won't get in at all now that this program has become more competitive. What is your first choice? And is your decision influenced by geography, or have you heard anything negative about the San Marcos program?

Good luck with the other school!

@missnurselady: Tuition question - is the $40K you're quoting also including living expenses? I was preparing myself to pay that much anyways but then I received the following fee schedule from the advisor with my acceptance letter:

"Clinical Fee per unit

$465.00

Didactic Fee per unit

$365.00

Associated Student Fee

$50.00

Childcare Services Fee

$10.00

Academic Technology Fee

$25.00

Athletics Fee

$60.00

Academic Records Fee

$12.00

Late Registration Fee

$25.00

Late Administrative Fee

$15.00

Drop Fee

see Academic Credit Drop/Refund schedule

Refund Processing Fee

$5.00

"

The entire program is 67 units total. If I average out the didactic and clinic units to $415/unit and multiple by 67, I get $27,805. I know there are also 2 or 3 upper division classes that everyone takes but it's a far cry from $40K. Are these fees on top of the regular tuition charged by CSUSM?

Hi all!

I recently just started the program this Spring (cohort 9)!

The total cost of tuition will range from about $33k - $40k depending on living expenses, transportation costs and etc.

The whole program itself is about $33k - $34k.

First semester is going fine and working is possible. Courses consists of "upper division" courses part of the BSN curriculum, but they are non-nursing courses. Nursing classes and clinicals start in the summer.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Just wondering what the schedule is like once you are in the clinicals portion. If I get into the fall cohort my child will be 2 when the clinical round start. I am wondering how to arrange for child care. Thanks

This program is new, so like all new programs you need to be flexible as they seem to constantly be changing the currriculum/schedules/new faculty etc. I wanted to start a programs asap as possible so when I got it, that's where I went. You learn quickly that being flexible is crucial since 'disorganized' is one word that we describe the program with a lot.

On the other hand, I want to be a nurse so I deal with it! lol.

Yes, working is possible during the semester if you have a REALLY flexible job that is willing to work with your schedule. I personally didn't work at all during the program but I'd say less than half the students work. There are 6 semesters total. Semesters 1 & 2 are light loads so working is possible. Semesters 3 & 4(especially 4) are hard so theres no way I could have worked. I'm in my 5th semester in May, but it seems that our last two semester are a lighter load so I might try and work during those semesters as a CNA just to have some experience and get an "in" at a hospital

As far as getting a job, we have heard that right now it's difficult even for RN's with BSN's to get jobs. As far as I know none of us plan on continuing in our programs masters program. We are hoping that in a year things will be better!

Good luck with your nursing journey!
