Cadavers

after reading some of ya'lls remarks about your a&p class i was wondering. who had human cadavers in a&p? if you do, what type/size school are you attending?

i attend a small community college, less than 1,000 students, but had a great a&p instructor. over 15 years ago, he insisted on having cadavers, he told the school they would not have a computer class without computers, so he needed human cadavers.we have 5, it is so great doing lab practicals on real bodies, i just can not imagine trying to learn muscles & arteries etc on cats or whatever is used by some schools.

he gets a new one every 2-3 years and has a dissection class. it is not required but i think it will be a great class to have. i have to brag on myself here for a minute. i was one of twenty-four accepted into the class. over 75 applied. i am so jazzed.

After reading some of the posts, I guess we were really lucky in our Anatomy class. I took the class at a junior college before transfering to a university, where each semester we had two new cadavers - one female and one male.

My instructor used to teach third year med students, so I guess he really understood the need to see "the real thing". When we read about the different anatomical structures in our books, they all looked so neat and orderly. Not so in the body! I'm very fortunate to have had the experience!

:)

When I was in school a few years ago (started nursing school, but had to drop), we had a cadaver in school. I still think that it was amazing to see! And over our break, our instructor had just "skinned" the fellow, so we could check out his muscle groups also. I do remember it was interesting, but it was also a long time ago. Kind of wish we had one around these days.

Julie:)

What years did you use the cadavers or the cats and such? I'm going into second semester for RN and there has been nothing said about disecting anything....We learnt our muscle groups on diagrams...

we use the cadavers in a&p. also, i will be having a dissection class, but it is not part of the nursing program, it is just an extra class i am taking.

It would have been cool to have cadavers...We did the usual animals. But we did have ADAM (helpful with names of bones and junk) and our teacher arranged for us to witness an autopsy at a large city a couple hours away. VERY INTERESTING. One of the most memorable things about school for me.

Way back when I had A & P the 1st time, we had cadavers that the 1st year med students had disected. This was at a large state school. I think having a med school at your school helps increase your odds of working with a cadaver. Those of you who will be working with a cadaver, remember not to wear wool or other natural fiber clothing. The preservative will cling to the fibers and you will never get the smell out.
