CA BRN 2011 Report: Must read!!

Wow, while it's been reported of the various issues affecting foreign students and nursing but more so from the ones with a PH educational background and doesn't matter whether you're a USC or PR or dual citizen or only of a PH citizenship, what's been in discussion in the AN site and more heavily mention in this forum has come to be published and open to the public even though the same thing could have been read in the CA BON 200 page minutes, the above newsletter sums up some interesting things.

While it's the "2011 BRN report", I guess it does take a while to really post it up.

Anyways, some of the interesting reads are titled:

-- "Phony Registered Nursing Programs", of which the Phillipines is mentioned. This is referring to the findings of those submitting RECTO false documents and some PH schools may have adjusted the transcripts to make for a more favorable compliance and why some PH grads from the same school didn't get approved.

-- "Update on BRN Investigations"-- the mention of hiring 4 Special Investigators in Nor Cal and 14 Special Investigators in So CAl. This is also partly where I read in the earlier CA BON minutes, they will be looking at those international applicants who have already obtained CA RN license and may already be working and may still be subjected to having their school's transcripts re-reviewed for concurrence compliance. If found deficient, they may keep their jobs but will have their licenses on a some kind of review or probationary tag, as long as they comply with the rules and get the requirements done in 2-3 years. There was always talk of how the CA BON was inconsistent at times. So now, with the larger investigation staffing, they can do their jobs.

This is what I was saying before, if you guys, know of someone who cheated and lied their way to get their RN license, REPORT them! I would as I have said also, if my own mother and sister did this, I would too (luckily for them, they're both not in the medical side rather on the financial business side, lol).

-- NCLEX-RN Exam Pass Rates: read the percentage differences between the US educated nurses taking the NCLEX-RN for the first time versus IEN's. WOW!

But really nothing new, as it's been mentioned by several others of the depressing number. Again, nothing wrong with our PH education, but it clearly shows why the US school teaching of "critical thinking" which the PH system lacks in. It's one thing to know what to think in simplier terms in our clinicals, but on other hand, on why it's being done, what's behind the reason one is doing what is being asked of them, what would you do, what's the right answer, what else could be or not what it coud be?

Why in the State's there's a one-on-one nurse to student ratio, not the 25-35 PH students hammering on one patient.

This was an eye opener for me after making good US nursing friends between what we learned and did versus they had to go thru....amazing.

Kabayans, please don't blame this on a language barrier, if you and I were taught in English from day one to graduation day, then obviously that's NOT the problem!

As one reads more and more into this report, you can see why it will become increasingly harder to obtain a good hospital job.now and into the future.

Regarding with the NCLEX pass rates I guess thats true but in my school we had this so called E-learning. It covered a lot of NCLEX topics and videos of different procedures etc that was based in a US hospital setting. Most of us thought it was useless but looking back it actually helped us become familiarized with NCLEX.

Also since the local board exam in the Philippines is constructed in a more traditional way. It is logical to train and prepare us to answer those type of questions. Hence, making Filipino RN grads foreign to the NCLEX approach.

It was noted in one of the CA BON minutes, there are 147 suspected nurses and applicants, so it was not specify that breakdown. They are increasing the investigations with one of them come renewal time is when they can ask for further re-evaluations.

How many years back can they go? Not sure, but I would think they may spot check those in certain years and see if there's more similar patterns of false documentations.

It was noted in a case where they found a PH nurse that had a complaint filed against him from a patient, who reported him and found him guilty and not only lost his CA license, but saw he did lie about his application and may be subjected to fraud charges.

While the above suspected are just that until they are proven guilty, let's truly hope that if they did submit a fradulent application and are already working as a full time RN, that they get your license taken away forever and will open the jobs for the more deserving nurses that did it the right way and worked hard at it.

I have absolutely NO mercy for these greedy nurses and if it means they need to find a lesser paying job or go for a long time without a job, that's their problem and so rightly earned that burden.

Like I said, if I heard from my friends or others that there's a possiblity that a nurse cheated their way in, I will have no problem submitting the complaint form to the CA BON Enforcement Unit and one can do so without naming yourself.

Let the CA BON do their part and if they are not guilty, no problem, but if they are not being honest and remain to be liars, I hope justice will be served.

The board of nursing looks at the nclex pass rate, anything below the norm which is 89 -90. Percent is considered a failure. I am talking first time nclex. if you look at grads from PH there initial pass rate is between 25 to 30 percent. In American schools if you fail a course you have to take clinical again even if you passed. There is a relationship between clinical and theory which is well documented.

I am guessing that the CA Board of Nursing had to take action when the PH nurses are unable to pass the nclex the first time.
