I was eligible to sit for the nclex for California.

Wow.. so I took my exam this September, went the distance all 265 questions. Unfortunately I didn't pass. Got my results and "near passing standard" all across the board so the news of failure basically tore me apart.

Now what makes it worse is after submitting the reapplication form and waiting for four weeks for a reply from the board, I get a letter today stating

:::: The Board has determined that the program you completed in the Philippines is not equivalent to the minimum requirements for licensure set forth in California Code Section 1426(d).

You may be able to view Section 1426 (d) and all other codes of the California Code of Regulations by going to our website at: www.rn.ca.gov. Once in the website there will be 'Tabs' at the top of the screen. Go to Regulations then to Nursing Practice Act and finally to California Code of Regulations.

California Code of Regulations Section 1426(d) states that theory and clinical practice shall be concurrent. The documents received state that some of the training was completed several semesters after the theory classes. ::::::

I email the evaluator in charge of my application and she explains ::::

You have options and that is to apply to the LVN Board or in another RN Board in a different state or go for your master's degree in nursing but in California you are not qualified as a RN without the Master's degree.

According to the RLE and the school's curriculum you should have completed the scrubs in NCM 101 and 102 but they were completed in NCM 104, 105 and 103. I am enclosing a copy of the letter that was sent to you yesterday.

I'm angry and sad at the same time. How is it possible that I was eligible to take the nclex the first time I applied and not eligible to retake now? I went from meeting the requirements of an RN to now meeting the requirements of an LVN. How is this possible?

They are saying I'm ineligible based on the dates of completion of my cases. The school requires 5 major, 5 minor, 5 assisted delivery, 5 actual delivery, and 5 cord dressing clinical cases which I completed or else I wouldn't have been able to graduate. All of a sudden Ca board is being technical about the completion dates of these cases. The school is well aware of the fact that completion of these cases is impossible to be concurrent with the theoretical classes. It is not always guaranteed that students will complete the needed cases in concurrent with the theoretical because there are times when there aren't any patients in the hospitals that we are rotated in. It is for this reason that the school allows completion of the needed cases through out the following semesters. We took the theoretical classes before we were allowed to go on our clinicals but the lack of patients made it difficult to complete those 5 cases during that semester. That's why some of my cases were completed one or two semesters after the theory classes.

Am I understanding this correctly? I thought all that matters was that my cases were complete regardless if it was completed in concurrent/along with theoretical or after theoretical. I learned what I was suppose to learn it just so happen that exposure to the actual thing came a semester later.

So now they are saying I can't sit for the nclex in California and I need to complete a masters degree to be qualified as an Rn in California. Is this possible? I went to school graduated with a BSN and in the end I'm told that I only qualify to be a LVN after submitting a reapplication for nclex. .

Clarification would be nice and I would appreciate any advice. This just makes me question if nursing is even the right fit for me cause it's been obstacles after obstacles.

they cannot provide an exact amount yet because they are still finalizing the program..i went to CSU's website and on average, students pay $3k plus a term for 6+ units (for residents).. you can call their financial aid office if you want to.

With regards to your other questions, I still have to ask her I guess. I will let you know when she emails me. Right now, I am willing to invest in my future. But of course, before I give them my money, I will make sure that they have been approved by the BON or I will go to Fresno and see the letter for myself since I don't live that far..

Right now, she cannot give you straight answers because they are betting on how many students will enroll in the program. They won't finalize everything until they get enough students, that is what they said. I will pm you her number if you want me to.

Good luck!

Hey troikaenerio

Thanks for the updated information!

I did look thru their website too. my friend called their office the other day and it's still unclear as you mentioned about the approx. tuition cost and fees.

They couldn't answer at this time, that even if one (my friend is a USC) will qualify as a "resident", since her actual BSN is an overseas degree and maybe fall under the international status. If so, then the school could also charge the out-of-state cost of an extra $356 per unit, making it an extra potential cost from $2,136 to maybe $3,560, PLUS the $3,000 tuition cost, so then it's like $5,136 to $6,560 for the 12 week courses. If it cost that much, I wouldn't be able to attend. Financial aid to international students is not certain either, but it didn't seem likely due to budget cuts and needing someone to qualify for such a loan.

As far as getting the courses CA BON approved, it's not for certain yet.

yeah but CSU is an accredited school. We are hoping for the best and I am sure as a resident, I won't fall as international student. i already asked our local colleges here and they told me if ever I go to school, I will pay the usual rates, not the high ones. We will still update this forum of the progress and I am positive about Fresno. All the other states will implement this concurrency issue soon..so there is just no other way of getting out of this situation than going back to school. Good luck on your endeavor!

any more word from CSU? its almost january. :( they still haven't confirmed.

Hi im interested in going to csuf. Can u please tell me who to contact?? Thank u:))

Hi Guys! Four of my schoolmates were granted ATT here in CA. I was the only one who didn't get it. I receive a letter today that I need to take MS and OB. I tried to call my analyst ***** *****but it's always her voice mailbox answering. I am very upset because all of my Clinical Cases were concurrent and still got this rejection. I will try to call her again later and will an explanation about this matter so I can move on. I found a school here in Fremont Unitek that is willing to work with me with Board request.

Curious? What country did all you guys graduate from? Did you all graduate in the same year? Everyone graduated from the exact same college? Of all your classmates, did you all apply with the CA BON at the same time (date/year)?

We all came from Phils. Graduated May of 2012. PCHS is our school. The BRN handles applicants by their last names. Each evaluator or analyst has their own bracket, for example A-B or R-S. The most famous evaluator who is very kind is (name redacted per site ToS). I've been hearing a lot of good feedback about him, for him giving the applicants a chance to take the NCLEX-RN even if there are issues or it is not with the BRN requirements. So in short you are lucky if you get this kind of evaluator.

It didn't work for me or another batchmate if this guy went by last name initials, was by chance this guy's first name started with "*"?

Hi squallnisha! I'm a newbie here. Can I have your email address please. I just wanna ask something about your analyst. I'm from the Philippines as well. thanks! my email add is [email protected].

So if you are a Master's Degree holder, they won't bother about you're cases concurrent to your theory semesters?

So if you are a Master's Degree holder, you are illegible to take the NCLEX-RN in California?

So if you are a Master's Degree holder, do you still need to take up additional courses in Cali??

please clear my mind, cause if that's the case, i will take up my Master's Degree here in the Philippines then..

The Ca board of nursing is looking at your initial education, if it is not concurrent the Masters Degree is not going to help you.
