Hi all!

When does the c-s incision dressing typically get removed in your facility, and by who?

Just curious :) As a relatively new RN sometimes I find myself hung up on small things like this lol.

Thanks!

We have orders to remove post op day 1.

Specializes in many.

Post-op orders say remove on POD#1. If the dressing is stained or needs to come off earlier to rule out a problem, SBAR the provider with the recommendation that it be removed earlier.

I generally explain to the patient that it will come off much more easily if they do it themselves after soaking it well in the shower. I'll help, but the patient knows themselves much better and can usually handle it.

Usually our physicians remove them when they round POD 1.

It depends on your facility. At my hospital only attendings, and sometimes residents, remove the dressing.

Over in UK our practice has moved towards keeping the dressing on for at last 48hrs, normally with a silver alginate ribbon directly over the wound. Anyone can remove them once that time is up, most mothers soak them off in the shower as we are also doing rapid discharges so often they will be at home at 48hrs.
