Notified of call before being on call
Oh, I guess the new manager has the same interpretation that most of us are used to. Idk, glad they're clarifying it for everyone so this misunderstanding doesn't happen again.

Notified of call before being on call
I agree with others. I don't know how long you've been in nursing but typically when you are hired, they should have explained to you what time they start placing calls for flexing/call shifts. When I am on call for my 7p to 7a shift, it is understood by everyone, clerks, techs and nurses that the charge nurse will start calling people at 5p for the next shift after staffing call at 430p. That gives everyone plenty of time to make it in on time for their shift. Now do we have to sometimes leave voicemails for people that don't answer? Yes, we just tell them to call back when the get the message so I know they'll be showing up for work. If I don't hear anything by 530-545, I will call again and/or text them. Just because your call starts at a certain time, doesn't mean that's the only time they're allowed to call you, otherwise no one would be at work on time. Plus the people working that should be getting off work would be mad, because they have to stay over since you weren't there on time. Now do I think that it warrants a write up, no. Most will just explain why they didn't respond to earlier calls and why they won't be in on time. But if I call you at 5p, leave a voicemail, and you don't get it until 0630 and are late showing up at 7p for your shift, that's on you not me. I gave you 2hrs to show up to your shift on time, vs when you are called after the shift starts, you have 1hr to show up.

Middle of the semester and I can't pay
$18,000/semester for a nursing degree? Are you saying this private school was the ONLY place you could get into? I just feel like that's alot. When you applied did you know the cost and did you have a plan in place for how to pay for it? Is this an ASN program? I'm so sorry you're in this situation as by the sound of it you really wanted to get into a nursing program. Unfortunately now it seems that you're enrolled in a program you can't pay for and won't be able to finish. Hopefully others will chime in with some suggestions as I can't think of any. Does the school offer any scholarships? Mine offered some assistance to it's nursing school students, we just had to apply and pretty much everyone got some sort of assistance even if it was a small amount.

Financing second degree BSN
Are you in nursing school yet? The only time I qualified was after I was already in a program.

Middle of the semester and I can't pay
Did you know how much the school cost before applying? Why did you not accept the federal loan offer without having an alternative option? Even though they did not cover everything it would have been something to help in the mean time while searching for another loan. Just asking.

Best hospitals for working postpartum or mother baby
Thank you so much for this info. I agree that I would like to try and balance safety, cost and being close to things to do in my spare time. I have a car so if I had to commute I would be okay with it. Any ideas on surrounding towns/cities that are considered less expensive but still have things to do without having to drive into the D.C area?

Travel nurse specialty postpartum
Hi, So I am looking into travel nursing, if possible doing postpartum (mothers only). Does anyone have any experience doing this or think it is possible? Most of the positions I see are for mother/baby. Problem is the hospital where I am permanently employed has postpartum and the well baby nursery as two separate units, so I don't have any experience with newborns. I've been a nurse for 4 years (2.5 yrs postpartum, 1.5 yrs step-down intermediate care) and would rather continue doing postpartum while trying out traveling until I go permanent somewhere hopefully doing mother/baby where I can get proper orientation. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated!

Dallas: Best hospitals for working postpartum or mother baby
Hi, I'm a 29 year old female thinking about moving the the Dallas area within the next 6 months or so. I have family in Tyler and am wanting to move to a bigger city for more things to do when I'm off. I have 4 years experience, 1.5 yrs in intermediate/step-down and 2.5 yrs postpartum where I work currently. I'm hoping to find a postpartum or mother baby position. My current hospital has the newborn nursery and postpartum units as separate entities so I do not have any experience caring for newborns other than helping mothers breastfeeding, changing diapers, etc. I am looking for some insight into the better hospitals for this specialty. My current hospital is magnet designated. Also I would love any insight into current pay for someone with my experience. I live in SC right now and work in GA with a base pay around $25. I was only able to visit Dallas for a day earlier this month when visiting family. I was able to walk through Parkland, Baylor and Texas Health Presbyterian. I don't know much about the area, so any suggestions about places that would be safe for a single female with no kids and a dog would be greatly appreciated! I would like to be near an area that has things to do, parks, outdoor activities, etc. I would be okay with a commute of ~20 mins as long as where I live has plenty to do in my spare time. Thanks in advance for any help/advice provided!

Best hospitals for working postpartum or mother baby
Hi, I'm thinking about moving the the D.C area within the next 6 months or so. I have family in the area and loved it when I visited earlier this year. I would also be okay with looking into hospitals in surrounding cities around the D.C. area in Maryland or Virginia. I don't know much about the area, so any suggestions about places that would be safe for a single female with no kids and a dog would be greatly appreciated! Help determining target salary
Hello! I'm a RN thinking about moving to the D.C area and working in postpartum or mother/baby. I've been a nurse for 4 years (1.5 years step down/intermediate care and 2.5 working postpartum). I'm applying to a Medstar Washington Hospital Center position and they are asking for a target salary. I would be moving from GA where I make around $25 base pay working nights. Since I have no clue what RN's make with my background, does anyone have any suggestions or insight into what RN's with 4 years experience make?

New vs used books vs renting
I always bought my books used online unless I couldn't find it anywhere cheaper than my bookstore. I always bought like new/new if the price was right. If I ended up buying it from the bookstore, I would look through the ones they had for the one in the best condition with no highlighting. When I decided to sell books, I never sold them back to the bookstore because they never give you much. I sold mine through Half.com and would usually make back at least 60%-90% of the original cost back. At least this way I was able to afford paying for the next semester's books.
