C+ Grades in the Science Prereqs

Published

Hi All,

I'm a career-changer applying for ABSN programs for 2010. I made the mistake of taking AP2 in the summer, and ended up with a C+. (I got an A- in AP1 that spring, so I'm really upset.) Either way, it's done, so I'm trying to figure out what to do from here. I know this rules me out of several programs, since it explicitly states on their websites that they want a B or better in the sciences. I also know that I'm up against 4.0 GPAs for the prereqs and students with healthcare-related experience. I have a 3.3 undergrad GPA and a 3.5 master's GPA, and a year of volunteering as a mentor.

I'm feeling really discouraged right now. I still have Chem and Micro to take in the fall and spring respectively, so all schools will see on my prereqs is my A- and my C+ for the sciences (a mediocre 3.0). Is a C+ the kiss of death? What would you do?

Any advice is appreciated. I'm bummed.

I know it would not be fun at all, but is there any way you could retake the course you got a C in? If they do not allow you to retake it, maybe you could consider going to another school.

You could also consider applying to a larger range of schools, like ones in more rural areas with less applicants.

I've seen many times when people on these message boards get into nursing school and do not have a '4.0', I've seen people with under 3.0s get into nursing school.

You can do it! Don't get discouraged!

I would retake any course I received a C in. Apply to programs that allow retakes. Don't worry about the programs that do not allow retakes. Good luck.

Wait, this rules you out of several programs? Most programs I've seen allow C's as long as you didn't get a C-. If you find yourself sitting around doing nothing waiting to get into a program, re-take the class if you can, but otherwise I'd just apply around! I've almost never heard of a school ruling you out if you have a C+. I have two C's and I'm next up on the waitlist for a program here in CA.

As long as you have good grades in the rest of your classes, I don't see it making much of a difference. I mean, of course you want your GPA as high as possible, but if you do stuff like volunteer and whatever other things your program of choice hands out extra points for, then you should be fine :) I wish you the absolute best of luck!! :)

I would either retake the class or take the other classes that you need and apply AFTER you take them. That way one C+ in a sea of As and Bs won't look too terrible and your GPA will be higher than if you apply before takaing those classes. It shows that you're not on a downward spiral but rather just had a hic-up and your back on track.

IF I were you, see how you do in CHem and In Micro...

My grades are... B- in Anatomy and Chemistry, Solid B in physiology.. and an A in Micro.. keeps my GPA at 3.1 for science pre-reqs alone, which is what most programs ask for. If you got and A in chem and an A In Micro, or even B's.. you still might be OKay.. what i would do??? Finish what you have to, apply, if you dont get in... enroll and take it over, and mark it as in In progress class and on your future applications!

Dont be bummed... wait and see how you feel after chem and micro.

If you're thinking of retaking A&P2, you also want to keep in mind (and I read this on some other thread) that some nursing schools may not accept A&P2 at a different school from which you took A&P1, they have to be from the same school. I took the full sequence of A&P twice (years apart) just because my schools need me to have taken it more recently. There was really no difference between the 1 and 2 content between the schools (we're also talking different states). Don't want to discourage you, but I would check with the nursing schools you are considering if different schools will be an issue. I agree with everyone else, try to ace the rest of your prereqs to spin a cloud around the C+ if you're keeping the grade (and assuming the program's minimums are a C for prereqs).

Most of us tend to focus on the fact that nursing school applicants are increasingly presenting as close as possible to 4.0 GPA's (the last class that started @ one ABSN I am vying for had an average undergrad GPA of 3.7, which I don't have but I am still going to try considering I have other positives to bring to the table). Never get discouraged by numbers and by all means if nursing is your passion, never give up!
