Hi,
I'm currently an econ/business major at UC school, but thinking about doing nursing. I've always wanted to work in healthcare but was really undecided so I went with econ but I'm now realizing that nursing would probably be a better fit. I just can't see myself working in business.
Anyways, I'm about to finish my 2nd year and am wondering if it is too late to switch to nursing. I have all my GEs finished, but I doubt any of my classes would transfer except for maybe calculus and one quarter of gen. chemistry... My school (like most UCs) doesn't offer a nursing program... So is it best to just finish up my bachelor's in econ or change schools? If I do decide to do nursing, I would want to eventually get an advanced degree and hopefully become an NP.

I would finish up the semester and transfer to a community college to finish up your gen ed and prereqs, then apply to ADN and/or BSN programs through community colleges and CSUs. If you know you want to do your NP, look at the CSUs for BSN programs. Many of them are going to 2 years at this point, too!
Take a look at what CSU BSN programs require (statistics, chem, anatomy, physiology, micro, etc) and start chipping away at it. Don't waste more time and money on a degree you have no desire to use. Plus, if you already have a degree, it limits your options, and you are no longer eligible for financial aid.
Also, look at the nursing market in your area. Most parts of CA have a high nurse unemployment rate because the market is so saturated, particular in major metropolitan areas like SF, SD and LA.
Thanks for your quick feedback!
Well I'm not completely sure I want to switch nursing so I need the next few months to plan everything and think it over. I also need to get some exposure to the healthcare setting maybe through volunteering at a hospital or shadowing a nurse.
As of now, I don't want to completely ditch the work I've put into getting a BS in Econ, so I probably won't want to apply to an ADN program at a community college. I already have my general ed requirements finished so it is the science prereqs I'd have to worry about.
I'm thinking of finishing up my current degree since I'm lucky enough to get a good amount of financial aid while but also doing the nursing prereqs at a local CC during the next 2-3 summers. Then maybe apply to an accelerated BSN program or a direct entry MSN program. Not completely sure though as I need to talk to an advisor and research the possible routes I could take.
So in short, I'm still contemplating whether or not I should finish up my current bachelors and then do an accelerated BSN or direct entry MSN so any insight on these programs would be appreciated!

I changed from a business major (finance) when I was 15 hrs from completing my degree…..and I had to start all the way over pretty much English/Lit, Calculus, History, and Fine Art were the only gen. ed. classes that were part of the nursing requirements. I went to a community college for the first year of nursing pre-reqs than transferred to another 4 yr university BSN program. SO it can be done!
( And yes my parents were not happy at all when I did this change! I was told that I would have to finance this degree because they had paid for the last 4 yrs that I had just decided to throw away pretty much!!! I had to sell my house that I had inherited and move back in with my parents and work for a year to save up so I could start be nursing degree…..BEST CHOICE I EVER MADE!!!!!)

I'd finish up your bachelors while completing prereqs and gaining volunteer experience then apply to ELMSN programs to become a NP. It's the fastest route I think if being a NP is your end goal.
