Buffalo (UB) ABSN Accepted for May 2014

Nursing Students General Students

Hi all,

I just got accepted to the ABSN program starting in the Summer of 2014 and wanted to start a thread to try and meet some classmates.

Anybody out there?

Hi Tera,

I got in too. I'm really excited. Are you from buffalo? I live in the area.

Sarah

TERA!!!!!

WE DID IT!!

Haha.

sm17horv, I am from Buffalo. It seems like there are a lot of locals in the program.

Alicia! woo hoo!

Yep, I'm from Buffalo sm17horv. Taking my last 2 finals for my last prerequisites today and looking forward to having a break from school until May.

I was just introduced to a guy who is in the program now, and I'm planning on grilling him for details. One of the main things I want to know is how the job prospects are around here and how UB helps nursing students with career advising. I know we have a long way to go before the job hunt starts, but it's important to me considering all the doom and gloom I've heard about the job market not being so great.

I was thinking about trying to do some volunteering before the summer semester starts- has anyone had any experience?

Hello!

I'm in too! TeraTW- thanks for starting the new thread!

My husband is a new nurse- graduated from an ADN program in May. It took him longer than we expected to find a job (we are also in the Buffalo area), but he was sort of picky. Only wanted to work at ECMC. It took him four months, but he is very happy now. He also has the 2 year degree, so hopefully it will be a little easier for us.

I'd be interested to know what the current student you met has to say.

Does anyone know when we will get more detailed information, like schedules, financial aid, etc.?

Congratulations everyone!

I have very little healthcare experience. LOTS of people experience, just not health-related. It couldn't hurt to volunteer ahead of time.

Hi Scanders!

Four months while being picky doesn't sound too bad. Did your husband have any medical field experience? Do you think we definitely have an advantage with a BSN over an ADN? I want to be a Nurse Practitioner so that is the main reason I'm going for a BSN.

Can't wait for orientation!

Hi Alicia! No- my husband was a career-changer. He was a wood-worker for years and after being laid off a few times, got an Anthropology degree and, while doing that, decided to be a nurse. He finished and at that point decided to get the ADN. It was a round about path, but worked for him.

I do think we'll have an advantage w the 4 year degree. Kaleida rarely hires ADN RNs because they are trying for magnet status, so that's a plus. My husband liked his program and was pushing me towards it a little, but I plan to be an NP too, so the ABSN seemed like a no-brainer (I am still so psyched I got in!!). I'm hoping it gives me an edge into UB's DNP program- we'll see. :-/

Does anyone know if we get more detailed information before April?? I have so many questions, but I don't want to bug the nursing office staff- haha!

I haven't heard if we'll get more details but FYI, UB has an early assurance DNP acceptance program. You can apply senior year which is Fall semester for us. Grad school exam is waived! There is more info on the website.

I just graduated in May. Work at ECMC now. I got hired in June. I think it is all luck for job prospects in buffalo. A lot of my classmates are still looking for jobs. The best advice I can give is try to find a job in a hospital as an aide, tech, anything at Kalieda, Catholic, or ECMC. Improves your chances of getting hired right out of school. Having said, I had no experience prior to working.

Alicia- thanks for the info- that is great!
