BSN student looking for community volunteering opportunities- Chicago

Published

Hello ,

I'm currently a student in an accelerated BSN program in Chicago. I'm about half way through and looking into grad school to become an FNP. I want to expose myself to community nursing, and just to different ages and populations. I work in a hospital as a CNA in a telemetry unit so most of my patients are elderly. I absolutely love working with the elderly but also want to get myself comfortable with interacting with the younger generation as well. I find myself feeling very awkward when I get patients who are under 50 lol if that makes any sense.

Anyway, I have looked into my nearby community clinics and I'm still waiting on hearing back from them. I don't have a lot of free time either as I'm doing work and school full time but I would like to give back in anyway I can and get an idea of what a community health nurse does. I think I would be a great experience. Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities in a community setting in Chicago. I am also Spanish speaking which I think should help.

Hope to hear from you all :D

Call your Department of Public Health and find out where the PHNs are. They are an incredible group of nurses and will be happy to tell you about their work life. Speaking Spanish is a huge plus in community nursing.
