BSN nurses, how much did your schooling cost you?

Published

I got a LPN in 2014. I opted to do a LPN program because I already had all the pre-reqs and thought I could do a LPN-RN after. BIG MISTAKE! As soon as a graduated all the LPN-RN bridge programs disappeared. The closest LPN-RN program is at a community college (obviously cheap option) is 1.5 hour drive away with a waiting list in place. I do not see this as a realistic option. A 6-8 hour school day and a 3 hour round trip and work, kids and husband. You get the point.

I have found 2 LPN-BSN programs.

one is University of Phoenix 62K and 4.5 years part time program

the other one is Platte Nursing program, 85K 3 years full time.

Is this an average price for a BSN program? I am feeling completely stuck :( Have not been able to secure full time employment as a LPN I am working at 3 different companies just to get enough hours. Seems like the best bet it going back to school.

ADN, 3 semesters at ~$2800 per semester plus about $1000 for books

BSN, 1 term at ~$4000 including books

I got laid off, so the state paid for my first two semesters (and books) of my ADN as part of my retraining.

Yup, I have a BSN for less than $7,000. I could have gotten my employer to pay for my BSN, but I didn't want to stay there that long.

At my ADN program, LPNs got credit for just 5 credits out of the 75 total. It might make sense to see if you can just do an ADN program for your RN. If you can do that at a community college, the cost of those 5 extra credits will be negligible compared to what your are looking at.

I don't have my BSN yet, but my ADN is free (scholarships, grants), and I'm planned to go the WGU route for RN-to-BSN. If it takes me a year, that will cost around $7-8k, although my employer will reimburse $3000 of that, so out-the-door, my BSN will have cost me approx $5k from start-to-finish.

In my nursing class, we have 2 LPNs that decided to just start from scratch because of the lack of LPN-RN bridge programs. With our community college being so affordable and the myriad of financial assistance options available, it was the best choice for them, that may be your best bet as well.
