BSN from abroad wanting to pursue FNP in US

Published

Hello everyone,

First off I apologize if this topic has already been discussed in this forum. I did see some topics related to this but were very outdated.

I took my BSN abroad and have 11+ years total RN experience abroad and in US. Currently employed in US.

I would like to apply for FNP school preferably online but was wondering if anyone has been in this situation and what did you have to do? My main concern is the GPA. We did not have a 4.0 system and I have no clue on what the equivalence is. Mine was on a 0-20 scale.

If anyone has any ideas or pointers I would greatly appreciate to hear them!

I received my BSN abroad too and got my MSN in the US with an ACNP focus. Is your overseas transcript in English and is there a way for the school in the US to read and assess it? If not, you may be asked to have your BSN transcript evaluated by a third party. There are many credentials evaluation service providers around and the school you wish to attend would be able to recommend one for you.

Yes I already had that done... Twice actually. What about the GPA? Was yours a 4.0 scale or something different?

My overseas program didn't use the 4.0 Scale either. But the transcript was in English and there is an explanation of the grades in the bottom of each page. The school I applied to (a state university I attended in person), accepted my transcript and considered my grades as meeting their minimum GPA requirements with no further questions asked. A friend who was from the same country as I was but went to a different BSN program had a tougher time with the same state university.

There was another state university I inquired with that wanted my transcript reviewed by a credentials evaluations service. I didn't pursue that school because they didn't have the NP track I was interested in. I think the bottomline is you should start applying to schools that interest you so you will know what other steps the school will require in your situation.
