Hey all! Just wanted to start a thread for all of us who are attending North campus starting August 2010:yeah: Can't wait!!!!! Anyone start any of the reading listed on the Nursing Process instructors web site yet?
THANK YOU..sunraygurlRN2B for all of the very helpful information! Any other advice you can give us on the way will be much appreciated!
I headed your advice, and have purchased all of the books you recommended, and did not buy the bundle, study guides or evolve books. I also did get the test taking skills books you suggested.
I was able to buy most of the books new from Amazon and a couple from B&N. Still saved myself quite a lot of money. Couldn't find used books that were low enough in price to consider over buying new. I paid $71 for the (NEW) Fund of Nursing!
Turned in my binder and folder to Bldg. 41 at front desk yesterday.
Getting a head start on all the reading!
thank you..sunraygurlrn2b for all of the very helpful information! any other advice you can give us on the way will be much appreciated! you're welcome! did i mention to make sure you buy the nur1020 module (its a packet in the bookstore)? its the objectives for the course. what i did, and what worked for me, was i would type up the objectives into a word document. then i would read the book before lecture and answer objectives with what i read and i would type them into my document. then i would go to class, take notes and then go home and type in the answers to the objectives that came from my notes. then i would use the completed document to study from for the exam. i have to warn you, this was extremely time consuming, but i found that it worked, so i kept doing it. i know it won't work for everyone, so you'll have to come up with a plan ahead of time.also, one thing i found really helpful, and i do it because i am a little obsessive :), was to figure out ahead of time what i needed to read and plan it out. i used my planner, and i would write in each day which pages i needed to read. i would figure out how many pages i needed to read for the topic for the next lecture, and i would count all the pages and divide by the number of days i had to read them by and that number was how many pages i would read per day. it sounds like a lot of work, but you don't even really have to count them by hand, i just used the table of contents and saw what page this chapter started and ended on and went by that. anyway, i would see the whole thing laid out ahead of time and i was able to see right away if i was falling behind.
you cannot fall behind in the reading. a few pages, maybe a chapter, but do not fall behind. it will turn into a snowball effect and you will find yourself deeper and deeper into it. the first semester is going to be crazy and overwhelming. but it gets better. i won't say easier, because the information isn't easier and the classes aren't easier. but i think its a combination of the fact that pharmacology and math are over, being more used to the critical thinking test taking, feeling more confident. i started watching tv again after the first semester. :)
one thing i would suggest, after your exams, you can choose to review them with the professor (which is just looking at your test and your answers) or going to the lady they will introduce to you the first week (sorry, can't say names on here) who is kind of like a guidance counselor. if you go see her instead, she will go thru the wrong answers with you and give you the rationales as to why the correct answer is correct. you will not be able to see her to review your exams past first semester. i thought it was beneficial to me at first, and after the first exam, i stopped going to see her.
lastly, i would take part in a study group. study on your own first, and a few days before the exam, meet up with your group. also take advantage of the tutors in the library. they are free.
i headed your advice, and have purchased all of the books you recommended, and did not buy the bundle, study guides or evolve books. i also did get the test taking skills books you suggested. i would start looking at the beginning of that book now where it talks about different types of questions and picking out answers, etc.

turned in my binder and folder to bldg. 41 at front desk yesterday. awesome. i actually have to do my physical, fingerprinting, drug test and background check again. they expire in a year, so you will have to do that next summer, too. just a heads up.
getting a head start on all the reading! i think that is a great idea
good luck! let me know if you have any other questions. sorry it was so long-winded.
sunraygurlRN2B...thank you again...and no don't worry about letting us know all of the details. I find it ALL very helpful!:)
I like your idea about counting how many pages to read. I am an avid reader...so I'm already ahead with the reading list assignments in the Fund. Nursing book. I don't watch TV much and love to read.
ok so im tight on cash right now so I wanted to know :
Which books from the list do we really need for the first semester ?
Is there any other special books we need for the labs ?
How much is the modules packets ?
What is the name of the book that we need for the math class ?
How much is the supply box ?
Thanks guys for help and if you have any more info on supplies and suggestions on where and how to get them cheaper I would so appreciate it.

i'll post it in another message in a minute (gonna look for my previous post that i had done somewhere)
is there any other special books we need for the labs ?
you will use your clinical nursing skills and techniques book, jarvis physical assessment book and cox's book (see my list coming later for full title)
how much is the modules packets ?
according to the bookstore booklist, $7.30 each (one for np1 and one for np2) . they sell one big module later for all the rest of the classes (all combined) and that's like $30 something. i have not bought that nor have we needed it since nursing process, at least in my opinion.
what is the name of the book that we need for the math class ?
dosage calculation: a ratio-proportions approach by gloria pickar, 3rd edition, isbn 9781435454101. however, a lot of people didn't even use their book.
how much is the supply box ?
a lot, lol. $129. do not buy it until you are about to start np2. you do not need to buy it now, and if for some reason you decide nursing isn't for you before you start np2 and you want to return it, the store will not let you. sales are final. the school will tell you otherwise, but the bookstore will tell you they will not take it back when you go to buy it. reason is, people can easily take things out of the bag and the bookstore has no easy way to make sure you are returning the entire thing. you will be able to use financial aid for it right before np2 starts. you will always be able to use financial aid right before every class. i promise, i am on financial aid :)
thanks guys for help and if you have any more info on supplies and suggestions on where and how to get them cheaper i would so appreciate it.
going to look for that post now :)
Its actually on the previous page, post #22. You might have seen it already. I put in bold what I used. I really don't see the need for the other books, except for the Test Success and Fundamental Success books. Those are good with critical thinking test taking skills.
Also, see that post in regards to not needing the book for Math.
Hope that helps.
sunraygurl i can always count on you...thanks alot !!!!!
one more question...do you think its a good idea to rent the books ?
Well, perhaps. But whenever I have looked at the rental prices for a book, it has been my experience that the rental prices were similar to the used prices and have never found it to be a savings, if at all. Plus, you wouldn't be able to highlight anything if found that you wanted to do so.
Another thing is you will need these books for other courses as well, not just NP1 and 2:
Clinical Nursing Skills and Techniques- you will need this for future courses, but not all
Jarvis Pocket Companion for Phys Assessment- this is a good book to reference in other courses
Cox's Clinical Application of Nursing Diagnosis- you will be writing care plans every course and this is the book you use
Davis Drug Guide- you will need for all clinicals to look up meds
