Broward College January 2011

Published

New thread started for all those applying for / accepted to / attending Broward College January 2011. Chime in, let us know how you're doing!

It was 69 dollars without insurance for just the physical, which I have heard if you go to a physician it can go up to like 100-150 dollars. The ARNP at the MinuteClinic said they have the cheapest prices around for vaccinations. He may have been biased since he works there. I haven't checked out any other options!

The Dept of Health is another option but I hear u have to schedule an appt and they are backed up to January. This the one in Dade County, mayb u can try the one in Broward

The Community Health clinics may take walk-ins and that could be cheaper as well.

I had a physical done in August by my PCP, I just need to get a Tetorifice shot because I have all the other ones.

For those of you who have had your physical done already, what did it entail? What did the physical at the CVS Minute Clinic entail? (Like did you have to undress down into a gown?) They're not requiring PAPs for us ladies, are they? I really have no idea about physicals! Was doing some research online last night, though, and saw things about people saying they had to undress down into a gown in just their bra and undies, and that sometimes during a physical women are given a PAP.

When we're weighed, do we keep our clothes/shoes on? Is our weight reported to the school? It seems like such a personal thing to report to the school. I get why they'd want to know we're healthy, and why they'd want us to get vaccines/immunizations, but do they really need to know our weight and BMI?? I hear they figure your BMI out during a physical. Is that reported to the school, too? Can Broward take away someone's acceptance due to someone's weight??

I ask this because I'm honestly AFRAID of this! It seems discriminatory. I'm around 5'4, 5'5, and I weigh around 90 lbs. I don't have an eating disorder, just a high metabolism, (plus I'm on a medication called Topamax for migraines that's made me lose a bit of weight) but I know people think I'm one of those girls that do, and I suspect a doctor will, too.

I'm scared to get this physical just because of stepping on the scale. I'm perfectly healthy, just pretty damn skinny.

I think the College just wants to know that u are healthy and are vaccinated. U will be going to the hospitals were there are alot of ill patients. I am not for sure if they make/require u to undress. I went to my own doctor and I only removed my shirt for a breast exam that she did and for an EKG. Other than that, she just asked routine medical history questions, took blood, and checked for scoliosis. The college is also looking to see if u have any physical limitations. U will be required to lift a certain amount of lbs. during clinicals.

Try some deep breathing exercises to calm down and not stress over the exam. If u are uncomfortable with exam and not knowing what they will do, try calling and asking what the physical entails. Don't stress out too much, we need to save that energy for school. That's when we will REALLY be stressed...LOL I think u will be fine.

Honestly, the physical is just looking for major health problems. I didn't undress and anything for my physical last year or when I had to renew it for my second year this past summer. Even saying that you will be required to lift during clinicals is pushing it because if a patient requires lots of help you get your classmates to help you or even the lifts. My first rotation was on a respiratory floor where everyone was intubated and barely conscious and all we did alll day was load and unload the lifts. As long as your healthy I wouldn't be concerned. But, if you have a problem (I'm not saying you do but just telling you how the professors are) and it's noticable some professors are not shy to ask about it. And for anyone with a blood pressure problem....get it checked and worked on before the program. Because...in Process 1 you learn how to take vitals and have to do them on each other in front of your professor. If your BP is high theyll send you home and have you get a doctors note to come back. Anyway....I know its hard but TRY NOT TO STRESS! :) It can truely get in the way of your learning and success...trust me...I've seen it. Just stay focused.

Do they also send you home if you have low blood pressure? That's odd! I hadn't heard that one before.

I know classes don't start for another almost two months, however, our orientations aren't until the first day of class, so I'm wondering how we go about figuring out the business of uniforms. No one told us about them during Pre-Admission. I assume we don't need to wear uniforms our first day of class, then, and likely will have a certain time period in which we will have to get them by. Anyone have an answer for this?

Also I've heard around on these forums that Broward allows different brand of pants as long as they are in the same color. Is this true for all campuses, and does anyone know if this is true in particular for Central campus? Has anyone already in the program gotten a different brand of pants from somewhere, and if so-where, and in what color?

For my physical at CVSMInuteClinic they did not make me undress. He checked my height, weight, BMI, Blood pressure, listened to my lungs, checked ears, nose and throat, checked motor skills by having me walk on my tip toes, walk on my heels, touch toes so he could check spine alignment, checked joints by twisting arms and legs. That is about it!

At North we were told that we didn't have to wear uniforms for the first week. They said we had to by the uniform for Broward College, so I'm not sure if you can buy pants somewhere else. You may want to take a look at last semester's forum. I remember some people talking about that in there!

What about the fingerprinting and the FDLE background check? What happens there? Do you get your results right then and there or how does it work out? Is it all done in one place or in multiple places that we have to drive to?

Do they also send you home if you have low blood pressure? That's odd! I hadn't heard that one before.

I didnt know of anyone with low blood pressure going home but I know two with high that were sent home and told they needed to see their doctor and have a note to come back.

Oh....just thought I'd mention this (I don't know if it's been brought up yet) but DO NOT be late ever....but especially in the beginning. At Central your first late for clinicals you have to write a paper, the second (even is it's two minutes) you have to make up 12 hours, and your third you have to withdraw and speak to the dean. Just be early so you don't have to worry.

Also,

There should be an orientation day before you start...like 2-3 weeks ahead of time and everything you need to know you can ask about then.

Unfortunately, at Central our orientation day is our first day of classes. :(
