Broward College January 2010 Acceptances

Published

Hi there,

I am waiting to see if I got into the Nursing Program at Broward College for January 2010. Has anyone heard one way or the other? Just wanted to see if anyone's heard yet.

Thanks,

Michele

I dont understand why would you have to take the HESI if it doesnt apply to MAY2010 program ?

For some reason, the BC Health Science advisor told me to take it. Perhaps she was mistaken and thought I was applying for August or something. Also, I am applying to another school (FAU) that does require it.

ohhhhh...ok just wondering

Anyone apply to the online program at BC? What is the schedule like for clinicals?? Let me know please!

Hey Sexy Mandy,

I was thinking to register tomorrow too with Central Campus as my first choice and South as second if I couldn't get in.

LOL O.K. I WILL.....

I am not clear. Can you take pharmacology before getting into the program? I just looked online and there are a few spots open. I am applying for the May program, and it would make sense to lighten the load by taking pharm in January, before the program starts in May.

Also, anyone taken it online? It might seem like a good one to take online, since it is a lot of rote memorization. I am thinking about it.

Don't remember if I mentioned it, but I am applying to Central, too. Anyone heard that they might not have May program at Central?

Apparently, if any is registered for pharmacology and is NOT in the nursing program, they will drop you from the class. Whether or not they actually do it, I am not sure. But the first night of class at north campus, the associate dean came in and announced she was going to be doing just that, and several people got up and walked out.

Also, the online pharm is only for those in the online nursing program. Even if you are in the program, but face to face at one of the campuses, you cannot take pharm online.

And someone asked about clinicals for the online program. My friend is currently in the online program and I believe she goes on Tuesdays from 630am to 6 something pm. I'm not sure if Wednesday is an option, but its only one day a week. The online program as a whole, however, is not very good. Not very many people passed and the instructor is not helpful in any way.

IMPORTANT! HELP!

Anyone registered to start North campus in Jan? does anyone know if there is an orientation coming up or anything? Have they sent anyone a list of what we need? like books, materials, what shoes specifically, uniform, lab coat...etc...??? Most importantly, do we have an orientation before classes begin?

Hi. I'm registered at North. Here is a link to the nursing process teacher. http://webhome.broward.edu/~gbrickma/calendars.htm It gives some info here. There is no other orientation. As far as shoes and lab coats, I don't think we will be doing clinicals at the hospital right away, so we won't have to have those things at first. I would guess they will tell us when we start in the first couple of weeks.

north has their orientation the first few days of school. you do not need to wear your uniform for the first week, however after the first week, you will need to wear your uniforms for every campus lab day. you won't be starting in the hospital until mid-february. they will tell you the type of shoes you can and can't wear during the orientation, as well as some of the other supplies you may need for clinical.

you do not need to have a labcoat, but there is a jacket you can purchase in the bookstore if you want- its smaller than a labcoat, all white and it has the bc logo w/ rn student on it in blue.

as far as books, there is a book list on the link willbeanrn posted (under "reading lists" there is a book list link). here is what is has for nursing process 1&2. i will tell you if i used them or not and when. some you will not need until np2, there are a few that you won't even need until gi/gu next semester.

nur 1020, nur 1210 nursing process, nur 2020;

castillo (tba) strategies, techniques, and approaches to thinking: case studies in clinical nursing, 4th ed. i don't think this book was on the list before, so i've never used it, but it looks like it might be helpful to develop critical thinking skills. maybe you can flip through it at the bookstore if its not sealed.

deglin (nur1020) davis drug guide for nurses, 11th ed. you will definitely use this but not until np2

jarvis (nur1020) pocket companion for physical examination & health assessment, 5th ed. this you will need, very helpful when learning about assessments

lewis et. al. (late in nur1210) study guide to accompany medical/surgical nursing, 7th ed. won't need this until next semester for gi/gu (also used later on in ortho/neuro and cardio) ***i was actually going to find out if this book was actually used or not from some of the upperclassmen

lewis et al. (late in nur1210) clinical companion to medical/surgical nursing, 7th ed. or pda version won't need this until next semester for gi/gu (also used later on in ortho/neuro and cardio) ***i was actually going to find out if this book was actually used or not from some of the upperclassmen, however i heard from one person it was optional

lippincott (nur1210) fluid & electrolytes made incredibly easy! 4th ed. you will definitely need this but for np2

newfield (nur1020) cox clinical applications of nursing diagnosis & intervention, 5th ed. need this

pagana (nur1020) diagnostic and laboratory test reference 9th ed. i never used this

perry and potter (nur1020) fundamentals of nursing 7th ed. with study guide and clinical companion you will definitely use the book, but i did not buy the study guide or clinical companion. i don't think anyone has time to use the other books, lol

perry and potter (nur1020) clinical nursing skills & techniques, 7th ed. definitely need

pickar (nur1020) dosage calculations: a ratio and proportion approach, 2nd. ed. you don't need this unless you want it. the teacher will tell you to go home and read chapters x, x, and x, but you don't need to. you can just keep practicing the math thats on the website. they use the same or similar math problems as the "nursing process workbook a"

taber (nur1020) taber’s cyclopedia medical dictionary 21st ed. i used this
