Hi there,
I am waiting to see if I got into the Nursing Program at Broward College for January 2010. Has anyone heard one way or the other? Just wanted to see if anyone's heard yet.
Thanks,
Michele

also for pharmacology:
hsc 1151 pharmacology
deglin davis drug guide for nurses, 11th ed. i never used this for pharm, but i started using it in np2
lilley pharmacological aspects of nursing care, 5th ed. never used it. he tests from his lectures, not the book. some classmates bought the book and read from it at first, then stopped reading from it later on.
lilley pharmacological aspects of nursing care study guide, 5th ed. i bought this, but the only reason i did was because someone told me some of the test questions came from there. there were a few, however, it wasn't a ton of questions, so i'm not sure it was worth the $20-25 i spent.

Thank you guys for the help! I feel better now I was worried about the orientation.
Sunraygurl,
You are amazing! thank you for the list of booksl. Im gonna try to start ordering them from amazon.com or something so that i get them cheaper. That was amazingly helpul!!! thank you thank you! :)
:) no problem. I had someone who was very helpful to me, so I figure I'd pay it forward.
I ordered most of my stuff from amazon as well, a few from ebay/half.com- saved a good amount of money, too.
If you guys want to start looking for shoes (don't know why I didn't just say this earlier, lol), I will tell you they must be all white, no openings anywhere, must have a closed back like a sneaker (not open like crocs), it can have a small logo (like the "S" on sketchers or the blue heart on Nursemates, but a big orange Nike check is not good). There are a lot of people in the program with Sketchers and Nursemates. Crocs are not acceptable.
Can they have a little gray/silver on them? because most shoes although "all white" sometimes end up having a little gray or silver on them like the logo will be that color and the some of the 'outline' of the shoe...
Here's a link to the Sketcher's I have and was told by the professor they are fine, and several others have the same exact shoes as well:
http://www.skechers.com/shoes-and-clothing/styles/trends/skechers_must_haves/product/energy/wml/?terms=millenium
My pants cover the tongue of the shoe that has the red/black tag, but my S is gray and she said that was fine.
Thank you again! I ended up doing some online shopping and I found some Nurse mates shoes on sale so I ordered them. Where did you get the booklist your provided me with? are those the exact same books you are using? Do you think there's a chance they may change them by Jan? I'm a little scared to start ordering them... I wanted to make sure...
I got the booklist from the process 1 professor's website:
http://webhome.broward.edu/~gbrickma/calendars.htm
Scroll down to "reading list" and look for the book list there.
As far as changing the books, I don't think the college as a whole changes books mid-academic year. I think all changes take place around Aug for the Fall and remain thru the rest of the year. I've noticed that with all the classes I have ever taken at BC. Also, there are no newer editions of the Perry and Potter books out now, and those are the books they've been using for years. But anyway, I just copied and pasted the booklist from the site, and just added my 2 cents to each book. There was a new book on there that wasn't on my list. I can't remember the name off hand, but it was the first book by Castillo.
When I ordered my books, I was always scared, too. But I saved money by not buying them at the book store and I haven't bought a wrong book yet :)
Oh ok great! This is wonderful! Thank for adding your two cents, it's definitely going to save me from buying unnecessary books and save me money as well. I'm gonna search for them on amazon and hopefully place orders this week that way I get them as soon as possible and I can start some reading ahead before classes begin...
Sunraygurl, how is it going for you so far in NUR process 1 and 2 and pharmacology? Did you like your professors? I've heard terrible things about the professors at Central and South and have heard that North professors are a bit more reasonable.
well, i can't speak for the rest of the program, but the process professor is good. She doesn't make it easy by any means, and I think that is a misconception the other campuses have about north (that its easier here) but she gives you a good amount of info, and if you know, or should I say UNDERSTAND, the info in the objectives (a packet you buy in the bookstore called the module), you'll do fine. The first few weeks are the hardest. You are adjusting to new teachers, new study habits, a larger course load, new type of testing......and it can get overwhelming. But once I adjusted, I found that the program, while still time consuming, wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought it was going to be. I guess I went in expecting the very worst I could, this way, it could only go up from there, lol. I honestly think if I can do it, then anyone can. I was so afraid at the beginning that I wouldn't pass NP1 and I remember thinking to myself, "What did I get myself into?" Not only did I pass, I got a B. I also ended up getting a B in pharm, and I am hoping to get a B in NP2 (we'll see next week, lol). I could have done better in pharm if I had studied more, but I usually just studied for an hour or two right before the tests because there was just no time between lecture and clinicals, and I have two kids on top of it. If you're not good at time management, learn how over winter break :) because you really need to know how to balance your time. Just a warning, the first exam covers nearly 700 pages of reading. Unless you can be diligent and stay on top of your reading well, then I would suggest to begin reading over break so you're prepared.
What I did all semester was this: I tried to make sure that for whatever lecture was coming up, I would finish all the reading for that topic by the time we started that lecture. Then, in lecture I took notes. Once I got home, I would take the objectives for that topic and I would type them into a word document and find the answers in the lecture notes and the book, and type them into my word document. Those word doc's are what I would study from, if I had any time left over, lol, because that was very time consuming. But seriously, I use those word doc's to study from. I also did practice questions in the Fundamentals Success and Test Success books. There are some NCLEX style questions at the end of each chapter in the Perry and Potter books as well.
