Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

Ugh. I've been to target, walmart, payless uniform advantage. None carried all white leather for men. Guess I'm gonna have to take a gamble with them fitting by ordering offline. I've heard the dansko are good

As a fellow male I can feel your pain on the shoe front, the shoes I've seen are ugly as homemade sin. Shox were suggested by someone on another board, and you can build your own all white leather version, but I am waiting for orientation before I buy them at $155.00. The link is below, and feel free to let me know of anything else you might run across.

(side note, I have wide feet so it is a plus that I can order them in a wider width than the normal Nikes in store.)

I actually just got these

They have a really nice cushion in them. The Velcro is nice because if anything spills on shoe laces they are a pain to clean and annoying the keep replacing.

This site also has a few male nursing shoes.

I know some of you asked me about what book I got to prepare for math, it's called:

Math for nurses

A pocket guide to Dosage calculation and drug preparation

By: Mary Jo Boyer

Isbn: 978-1-60913-680-2

The reason I got this one instead of the Kaplan version is because this book had things the other book lacked. I compared them side by side concept by concept and this book covered more and include concepts the other book didn't even have.

I just finished my nutrition class, now from here till May its nursing school prep time!

What Campus did you attend?

CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE STARTING BC NSG PROGRAM IN MAY!!! YOU HAVE PASSED THE FIRST HURDLE. IM AN LPN CURRENTLY IN TRENDS WHICH IS THE LAST CLASS OF THE PROGRAM AND IT IS A GREAT FEELING. THIS SPRING BREAK IS THE FIRST TIME IVE GOTTEN A BREAK IN ALMOST 2 YEARS. I MUST SAY GETTING INTO BC NURSING PROGRAM IS THE EASIEST PART. BE PREPARED TO PUSH AND PERSEVERE. IT CAN BE DONE. ID LIKE TO SHARE MY JOURNEY IF YOU GUYS DONT MIND. I PASSED MY HESI A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE PROGRAM STARTED AND GOT ACCEPTED RIGHT AWAY. I WAS NOT READY TO START BUT I HEARD GOD'S VOICE SAYING "I GOT YOU MY CHILD"! MY HUBBY, BESTIE, AND MOM SAID GO FOR IT AND THAT WAS ALL THE SUPPORT I NEEEDED. I PASSED THE MATH, PHARMACOLOGY, AND PROCESS 2. THEN I CAME TO GI/GU AND MY COUSIN WAS KILLED. I SHOULD HAVE INFORMED THE DEAN AND WITHDRAWN SINCE CLASS HAD JUST STARTED BUT I DECIDED TO PUSH FORWARD, I DID, AND FAILED. I WAS SO BROKEN FROM HIS DEATH THAT I WAS JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS OF READING AND NOT RETAINING ANYTHING. SO ONE OF MY FIRST ADVICE FOR ANYONE, ESP A GENERIC STUDENT( REM GENERIC CAN ONLY FAIL ONCE) IS IF YOU HAVE TOO MUCH GOING ON IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE OR YOUR 1ST EXAM GRADE IS BELOW A 73, WITHDRAW AND TRY AGAIN. YOU WONT REGRET THIS DECISON. YOU DO NOT WANT TO FAIL IN THE BEGINNING, IT IS SO STRESSFUL FAILING IN PROCESS 1 OR 2 KNOWING YOU STILL HAVE 7 MORE CLASSES AFTER THAT. OK, SO WHEN YOU FAIL YOU HAVE TO TAKE MRS. ITALIA'S SLS CLASS THAT TEACHES YOU HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE NURSING PROGRAM. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU CAN TAKE IT BEFORE YOU START IN MAY. IF NOT AT LEAST DO YOUR RESEARCH AND BORROW THE BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY JUST TO GET AN IDEA OF HOW YOU SHOULD BE CRITICALLY THINKING THROUGH NURSING SCHOOL EXAMS AND IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE TIME MANAGEMENT. YOU HAVE TO MAKE LOTS OF TIME TO STUDY. ID SAY LIKE 4HRS PER DAY MINIMUM. LISTEN GUYS/GALS PEOPLE ARENT LYING WHEN THEY SAY READ BEFORE LECTURE AND GO BACK AND REVIEW THE NOTES AND READ THE TEXT WITHIN A DAY AFTER LECTURE. THIS REINFORCES THE MATERIAL. DUH..LOL SO I TOOK ITALIAS CLASS AND THEN WENT BACK AND PASSED GI/GU, OB, AND THEN PYSCH. THEN I HAD MY NEXT STUMBLING BLOCK WHICH WAS MATH. I PASSED THE PEDS CLASS BUT DIDNT PASS THE MATH TEST AFTER 2 TRIES. SO MY NEXT ADVICE IS ALWAYS ALWAYS AIM TO PASS THE 1ST MATH TEST. IF NOT, YOU MIGHT BE LIKE ME AND WONT EVEN STUDY LECTURE, INSTEAD FIND YOURSELF DOING MATH EVERYDAY IN AN ATTEMPT TO PASS THE 2ND RETAKE. WHEN YOU FAIL MATH 2X YOU CAN CONTNIUE LECTURE BUT YOU CANNOT GO TO CLINICALS BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT CONSIDERED SAFE TO PASS MEDS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH GOOD REASON..LOL. ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO DO THE MATH TEST ON DAY 1 OF EACH NEW CLASS. YES, YOU WILL HAVE A 10 QUESTION MATH TEST EACH NEW SEMESTER CLASS THAT YOU MUST SCORE A 90% ON. DONT FRET, YOU CAN DO IT!! MS GREGG BRICKMANS SITE HAS WORKSHEETS ON IT TO PRACTICE FOR EACH NEW ROTATION. SO SINCE I FAILED MATH 2X I HAD TO RETAKE MS MELAINIE GULLIVERS MATH CLASS BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO REDO MY PEDS CLINICALS. I PASSED PEDS AND WENT ON TO ORTHO WHICH THEY SAY IS THEY HARDEST CLASS. IT WAS VERY HARD. I STUDIED MY BUTT OFF BUT PASSED. FOR ALL CLASSES GET LOTS OF NCLEX BOOKS AND READ YOUR RATIONALES. RATIONALES ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS. UNDERSTAND WHY THE ANSWERS ARE RIGHT AND WRONG. DONT JUST RUSH THROUGH THE QUESTIONS JUST TO GET TO THE ANSWER. SOME GOOD NCLEX BOOKS ARE SAUNDERS, MOSBY,AND LIPPINCOTT. SO I THOUGHT I PASSED THE WORST WITH ORTHO BUT THAT WAS FAR FROM THE TRUTH FOR ME. OMG CARDIO WAS NO JOKE. I PASSED BY THE SKIN OF MY TEETH. AND YES I DO KNOW PEOPLE WHO CAME ALL THE WAY TO CARDIO AND FAILED SO HOLD YOUR FAIL CARD FOR THE VERY END. YOUR GOAL IS ALWAYS TO BANG OUT EXAM 1 AND 2. GO EXTRA HARD ON THOSE 2 BECAUSE ITS A HORRIBLE FEELING TRYING TO PLAY CATCH UP ON EXAM 3. EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW THE MATERIAL THE STRESS OF HAVING TO GET A HIGH MARK ON THE LAST TEST CAN CONSUME AND OVERWHELM YOU CAUSING FAILURE. IN PEDS I GOT AN 84, 74, 64, and in that order. guess what, THAT BROUGHT MY average TO 74...YES THE ANGELS WERE ON MY SIDE. I WONT LIE I WENT INTO THE LAST EXAM WORKING OVERTIME THINKING I HAD ALREADY PASSED SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO BE TOO COCKY/CONFIDENT.. IN CARDIO I GOT A 71,78,73. I CRIED AFTER MY LAST CARDIO EXAM BECASUE EVEN THOUGH I STUDIED HARD FOR EXAM 3 AND I KNEW I COULD HAVE PREPARED BETTER FOR MY 1ST CARDIO TEST AND I THOUGHT I FAILED. AGAIN I BARELY MADE IT. I COULD HAVE PREPARED BETTER FOR CARDIO BECAUSE IT WAS AFTER WINTER BREAK SO I HAD 3 WEEKS OFF TO STUDY BUT I WAS TIRED AND LAZY.LOL. DONT BE LIKE ME. GET AHEAD ON YOUR MATERIAL WHEN YOU HAVE WINTER, SPRING, AND SUMMER BREAK. I WORKED THE ENTIRE PROGRAM EXCEPT FOR AFTER I FAILED MY 1ST CARDIO TEST THEN I KNEW I HAD TO STOP WORKING FOR A FEW WEEKS AND GIVE THE BOOKS MY ALL. EVERYONE HAS THAT ONE CLASS THAT IS JUST NOT THEIR CUP OF TEA. FOR MY CLOSE FRIEND IT WAS ORTHO. SHE HAD TO PUT IN A LEAVE OF ABSENCE ON HER JOB AFTER FAILING THAT 1ST ORTHO TEST. SPEAKING OF FRIENDS, FIND 2 PEOPLE THAT WANTS THIS NURSING LICENSE BAD. AND PUSH ONE ANOTHER TO THE END. FIND SOMEPLACE QUIET TO STUDY LIKE SOMEONES HOME WHO IS SINGLE...ESP IF YOU LIKE TO STUDY AND EAT IN COMFY CLOTHES( THAT WAY YOU CAN TAKE YOUR BRA OFF LADIES...LOL) WE USED TO GO TO NOVA BUT HATED HAVING TO LEAVE THE ROOMS AFTER 3 HRS TO GO DOWNSTAIRS AND BE ON A WAIT LIST FOR ANOTHER ROOM. BUT NOVA IS EXCELLENT FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDY. ALL COLLEGE KIDS SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR STUDIES. I FIND THAT LOCAL LIBRARIES ARE TOO BUSY, ESP AFTERSCHOOL WHEN LITTLE KIDS GET OUT. LETS SEE WHAT OTHER ADVICE... OK GET YOUR BOOK BINDED, THIS WILL REALLY MAKE STUDYING EASIER THAN BRINGING AROUND THAT HUMONGOUS FUNDAMENTALS AND MEDSURG BOOK. THAT WAY YOU WILL HAVE ONLY THE CHAPTERS YOU NEED FOR YOUR 3 EXAMS. ITS EASIER TO STUDY THAT WAY AND YOU CAN BRING IT TO WORK OR WHEREVER WITHOUT EVERYONE KNOWING YOUR BUSINESS. TO BE TRUTHFULLY HONEST....THIS HAS BEEN THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF MY LIFE. NOT EVEN CHILDBIRTH WAS THIS HARD. YES I SAID. IM A MOTHER OF 3 AND 9 YEAR OLD AND THE GUILT I FELT FROM BEING AWAY FROM MY BABIES WAS INSANE.THE DAYS BEFORE EXAM I WOULD STUDY FOR 12 HRS A DAY. AND THATS WITH BREAK. GUYS, YOU MUST BREAK, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO STUDY 12HRS WITHOUT BREAK. TAKE LIKE A 30 MINUTE BREAK EVERY 2-3HRS. CALL SOMEONE WHO LOVE OR WHOS ROOTING FOR YOU JUST TO HEAR THEIR VOICE OR A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT. IT SOUNDS MUSHY BUT SOMETIMES THATS ALL THE PUSH YOU NEED TO KEEP GOING. DO SOMETHING WITH THE ONES U LOVE AFTER EACH EXAM..MOVIES, DINNER, JUST KICK BACK AND UNWIND IF YOU CAN AFTER GRADES POST..LOL YOU'VE EARNED IT. OK SO ORTHO-NEURO I FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO HAVE A STROKE, HAD EVERY MIGRAINE IN THE BOOK, AND IN CARDIO I FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK..NO LIE...LOL ITS NORMAL. YOU MIGHT EVEN FEEL LIKE YOUR HAVING A MENTAL BREAKDOWN AT TIMES. WHATEVER YOUR FAITH IS, DRAW CLOSER TO THE HIGHER POWER YOU BELIEVE IN. OH YEA IN THE BEGINNING I USED TO HAVE THE BUBBLE GUTS BEFORE EVERY EXAM... GUESS WHAT GALS/ GUYS, IT NEVER WENT AWAY I JUST TRIED TO GET THROUGH MY NERVES AT HOME AND NOT IN THE SCHOOL BATHROOM. HAHA!!! WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY. IT MIGHT SOUND ELEMENTARY BUT STUDYING RIGHT UNTIL EXAM IS NOT LOGICAL. TRY TO GET A FEW HRS OF SLEEP BEFORE EXAMS ATY LEAST 6HRS. THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THINGS I WISH SOMEONE TOLD ME BEFORE I STARTED THE PROGRAM. AND YES TRENDS START FOR ME THIS WED BUT YOU BETTER BELIEVE EVEN THO ITS MY BEST BUDS BDAY TOMMORROW WE WILL DEF BE MEETING UP TO DO MATH PRACTICE BEFORE CLASS. I APOLOGIZE FOR ALL THE ERRORS IN ADVANCE..GOT TOO MUCH ON MY MIND. I HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE. REM YOU ARE ONLY IN COMPETITION WITH YOUR SELF NO ONE ELSE YOUR GOAL IS TO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM. DONT WORRY ABOUT YOUR PRIDE AND SHAME THAT GOES OUT THE WINDOW IN NURSING SCHOOL. HUMILITY GOES A LONG WAY. ONE MORE THING DONT LOOK DOWN ON YOUR CLASSMATES WHO FAIL BECAUSE YOU MIGHT MEET RIGHT BACK WITH THEM IN THE END. WE NEED TO BE THERE FOR ONE ANOTHER, SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER. NURSES ARE SOMETIMES THEIR OWN WORST ENEMY. IM NOT SAYING DROWN YOURSELF AND SAVE THE NEXT PERSON BUT DO YOUR BEST TO MEET OTHERS NEEDS. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WHO NEEDS HELP WITH THEIR SKILLS CHECK OFF OFFER A HELPIN HAND, IF YOU SEE SOMEONE GRABBING THE WRONG NEEDLE, WARN THEM. IF AN INSTRUCTOR JUST CHEWED YOU OUT FOR NOT BEING PREPARED SAVE THE REST OF THE GROUP THE PAIN BY SAYING HEY DONT FORGET THESE THINGS... I COULD GO ON ALL DAY. I WISH THERE WAS A BOOK ON HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE BC NSG PROGRAM BECAUSE NO SCHOOL IS COMPARABLE TO HOW INTENSE BC IS[/quote']

What campus did you attend?

Hello everyone I am new to your tread. I am accepted for May as well and I have been getting my medical history, background checks and immunization s in order. Does anyone know where we turn all this information in when we are finished? I don't want to wait until the last minute and waiting until April 5th is killing me! Also, classes open up this Friday? Are we supposed to pick them now or wait until after the big meeting? I am antsy to get it all done so I can actually start studying ?!

I am pretty sure we can only register for them after we have the orientation. You shouldn't worry about classes til then because normal students can't register for nursing courses and the rest of us can't til then anyways.

Welcome! Like Dr.beck said, we can't register until after the preadmission session. They will give us codes and we pick the ones for the campus we want to attend. As for the medical info, background check, and immunization all this can't be done until after then either. You will be given specific forms that need to get filled out, and can only use their vendor for background check. As for turning in the information we are going to have to create a binder based on their specifications and will be given a date and time to turn it in. That is based on the campus you attend. It gets turned into the nursing department on the campus of our choice but only on that date and after everything they want is complete.

Which campus do you want to attend?

Thanks for the answer. I am not 100% sure what campus yet probably Central. Have you heard anything good about one verses the others? I don't care how far I drive. As for the forms and vendors all of that information is available on Broward's website. I already got the background, saw my doctor, had the titer tests and just need to go do the finger prints and couple other, but just wasn't sure what to do with it when I am done. Here are some links for the forms (By the way get ready to spend some $$$$):

Broward College - Health Sciences Admissions

I also printed out the forms, finished my background check, physical and I am sitting here waiting to have my fingerprints done...all done via the directions on the Broward Health Sciences website. The only thing I saw that you couldn't do was the Urinalysis. So far I've paid: $38 for the background check via Certified Background (all done online) $60 for my fingerprinting here at Statutory Fingerprinting in Plantation and I also paid another $5 to get my physical notarized. I knocked out all my immunizations and my PPD last week at work.

I don't mind waiting to turn it in. I have the extra time now. I won't have it in a couple of weeks.

Oh that is so good! I had no records of immunizations (could not get any either) and at the health department they were going to give me all the shots it was like $400 and something, but the girl recommended I go to my Dr. to get the titer blood tests first. That turned out to be $400 (no insurance!) but I only need the hep shot now and I have to go to get my finger prints. HOT TIP!! Do the "immunizations help" when you get the background check, they will give you info and help you make appointments to get the titers wayyyy cheaper! I found out after the fact, my own doctor hosed me :)
