Broward August 2015

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this site, but I've seen other threads for other semesters for Broward College. I didn't find one for August 2015. I figured this would be a good place to share each other's excitement to (HOPEFULLY!) start the program in August. Let's all support each other on this journey! :)

Yes, I believe so too. I heard Fola was great. Hoping Kali is as well.

My central peers where yall at? Do any of yall know which books we need for process and clinicals if you're taking smith? As well for pharm and math because I checked out the list on the schedule page and a ton of books show up, however, I highly doubt we need all of them. So someone from central please help me out

Hey,

I'll be at central. I didn't buy the book for Pharm because I read on all the previous posts that the professor tests straight from his powerpoints so they never use the book. The Math sounded like no joke so I got the Dosage Calculations book, which I think is the only one, but I rented it on Amazon for pretty cheap since its only a short semester. Then I figure if we still need it after that you can always buy it out from Amazon. I have Smith too, and to be honest I bought all the books with the exception of the recommended ones just to be on the safe side thru Amazon. From what I've heard, all the Perry and Potter books including the study guide are important. I also heard that Davis's drug guide and the Fluid and Electrolytes book are necessary too. But yeah, I bought them all just to be covered and sell them or figure it out as we go along. Oh ya, and the handout in orientation talked about homework being due on 8/26 from the STAT book, its called like Critical Strategies, techniques, and procedures or something like that (sorry don't have it off hand). It said that it has to be a new book and we will fill in the answers and turn the book in as our homework so it has to be a new copy...hope that kinda helps..

Anyone go through WIA for financial assistance? I have all the paperwork for them, and I was told to come back on Tuesday with everything to start the process. If you used them, how long did it take to actually get the vouchers and whatnot? I've paid everything out of pocket so far, and hoping to either get my Fin Aid appealed thru BC or get aid from WIA...

I'm going to South Campus and I ended up getting all the books besides the recommended ones...(Okay, I might have gotten some of those too.) Didn't get everything brand new, some I was able to find good condition used. I got everything off Amazon, so it was still cheaper than from the college bookstore. Talking to some nursing friends who are further along in the program, they said that while we might not use all the books the first semester, they are helpful throughout the entire nursing program. Many of the books come with CDs or online access, which I like to be able to use, so that was another factor for me personally to buy them instead of renting. There are also a few that have workbooks and I was told that we needed those for homework to turn in throughout the entire first semester.

I'll be honest that Math is not my strong point, though I did really well on the HESI math so if that's the sort of problems we have to look forward too I might not be as worried. However, I bought the book new with the access because I wanted to make sure I have as many resources as possible. No way will I let a math class keep me from progressing in the program.

Also, I did read and hear from many people that we do not use the book for pharmacology, however I still bought the book. Since the professor emailed and said to read the first ten chapters, I thought maybe that was a sign. Hopefully we do use it because I bought it… At the end of it all, I would rather have the books and not use them than not buy them and wish I did. (Even though it was almost physically painful to press the ‘confirm purchase' button after adding all these books to my shopping cart! It will all be worth it though in the end!!)

If anything…books can always be returned or sold again online. I'm just one of those people who likes to be overly prepared rather then under prepared.

If it helps, I bought the South Campus orientation packet already and read through it. It does break down the classes each semester and what books each class will need. It seems as though after this first semester, we only have to buy one or two books per class. I Have heard that we do use some of the books from first semester through the other semesters…so, makes buying them now not as bad.

first time on here. Every one have M and T class, but I have M and F which I am really happy with. Anyone with M and F at North

Hi there alinne! I've seen a majority of MTh people..but I'm sure there are some MF if you look back on this thread! North ladies and gents on this thread were going to meet up the first day, you are more than welcome to as well! I've also created a FB page for North students: https://m.facebook.com/BCNursingNorthAugust2015

:)

I'm going mondays and fridays as well. I'm hoping to switch fridays math class to thursday.

I also have math on Thursday at 1. Not interested in the math class on Thursday at 8am. I don't need or want a crammed schedule. I ordered

a Litman schedule for 50 on Allheart.com. I heard

the professor do not like prestige stethoscope that the school is offering

I agree with you on that. The littmans are much better quality for taking BP. Worth the investment.
