Hey Guys! Thought I'd start a forum for those applying for Spring 2019 of the
Brookhaven nursing program. I still have to do the Critical Thinking exam, dosage calc class, Hesi! Can't wait to talk to you guys as we apply!!
I have begun the process of completing the prerequisites at Brookhaven for the nursing program and was wondering which is the best route to take when scheduling my classes? I am currently taking English 1301, Biology 1406, Speech 1311, and Statistics 1342. Would it be best to do Biology 2406 next semester? What classes should I take next semester and the following semester? And when do I take the HESI, dosage calculation, and critical thinking exams? My advisor did not give me much information at the beginning of the semester, so I am not quite sure how to go about completing the requirements efficiently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
As far as classes, it's really up to you. Just make sure you don't take too many difficult classes at once and get anything less than an A. Every point counts and it really adds up at the end. Remember you can apply for Nursing with like 27+ points, but you're not likely to get an interview and accepted without like 36+ points.
Your 3 nursing exams last for 2 years. Why not get them over with or get a head start?
For dosage calculations, just get it over with, it's a joke. Just do it over the summer real quick. No studying required.
Critical thinking is an exam that you can't really study for it. So take it asap and see what it's like. The average score is 9.9 out of 15. If you get like 11.5+ then you're solid. The questions on this exam, from when I took it, are "what would you do in this scenario" questions. The correct answer is based on rules and regulations of medical facilities, not opinion/ethics based because everyone has a different moral compass. My adviceight be a bit confusing but take the exam once and you'll see what I mean.
Hesi, you should just take it asap every semester and shoot for a 90% or higher. Honestly, you won't do well if you havent taken A&P and other core classes. But it gives you a good idea of what the exam is like.
Leaving room for error, I set my goals for 11 points from classes, 11 points critical thinking, and 15 points Hesi. That adds up to 37! Adjust based on what you think you can do and set goals throughout your prereq years to meet them?!
Side note: Get your shots taken care of like 6 months before you are applying.
Your A&P, and major sciences are important information you need for your hesi, nursing school, and as a nurse! Be sure you take a lot of time to study! It's a marathon, not a race! Honestly your lecture and labs will only cover 30% of everything you should know to be a great nurse. It's not "pass your exam" type of studying. It's a learn, retain, and can apply to future information type of studying. It should be hard. People who study with intent get into nursing school.
Hope that helps. Good luck! If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Though I won't answer as detailed as this msg.

Jason gave you some great info, but before my interview they gave us a handout and there are quite a few changes for the fall semester. There will be no critical thinking exam, which in my opinion is good because it hurt me since even though I got accepted I got a 52 on it! Haha also your GPA must be a 3.0 now and if you make a C on any prerequisite they are accepted but you get no extra admissions points. The five year science rule will also apply but it sounds like you don't have to worry about that.
Oh really? Why did they make us suffer with that useless exam. I need to go to the office and ask about all these updates. Jeesh, because of being accepted as a dual enrollment student I haven't been updated on anything for like months.
Speaking of which does anyone have any updates on what we need to do next now that we're accepted? Like insurance, CPR certification, background check and etc?

I know! This is killing me. Haha I'm sure you got in! I think everyone was super nervous. I applied with 37.2 and feel like I didn't do my best on my interview either. I was so nervous I like blacked out. Hahaha
