Brookhaven Nursing Program

Published

Hello everyone!! I have been doing my support courses for the last year and a half and I'm going to apply for the nursing program at Brookhaven this month. Though I'm not really stressing about it I am a little worried. This is my 3rd attempt at college and the first 2 times I did horrible!! Since I made the choice to go to nursing school in Summer of 2009, I've brought my GPA up from 1.76 to 3.0. And, all my grades in my support classes have been A's and B's except 1, Nursing Pathophysiology. I made a C in that class and it would have been a B if I had not made one mistake at the end of the course. So, my question is does anyone think that C in that class will hinder me much? If anyone can offer any insight it would be great. Thanks!!

MJcruiser, vinnyb is right, I was declined last application period and I also had 29.XX points, and the reason I got in this semester was because I took patho over wintermester and got in with 31.07 points. I am probably very low on the list, but if your taking all those support classes you should end up with like a 35 and that will defiantly get you in! Also they said that a lot of people on the waiting list tend to get in for Fall because of the large gap between the application and actual starting. One of the advisers told me that last fall about 8 people got in off the waiting list. So there is some hope for a few more in this semester. I got a 92 on the hesi and the Brookhaven advisers told me to not retake it. I did not get 3 points for re applying, they stopped doing that a few semesters ago. Good luck and keep trying!

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I got in too!!! 31.07 points!!!! I bet I'm at the bottom of the list lol! I will have 32 points after this semester though, because I am currently taking death and dying at Collin college. I am so excited!!!! I am looking forward to meeting all of you, I will be the short, chubby, and long brown hair in a pony tail hobbit looking student with a big smile on my face because I FINALLY got in!!!! *does a little dance* All my friends that are in RN programs are saying sleep now... because this will be our last chance. So good night everyone :D haha!!

*added* Sweatpea!!! That was great thank you SOOOO much for sharing all that info! I am so excited and worried and you helped me feel a lot better! I tried to personal message people that got in but I have to upgrade my account. :( sad face, I gotta save moneys for school. Maybe we can join a FB group :D

*Advice* so I have called the school multiple times about my hep 3 shot thing, I took mine over a 13 month span and they said the most important part is to prove it, so I called all 3 different doctors and had them fax my proof. I STRONGLY suggest everyone take care of this ASAP because some of those offices are slow. As long as you have 3 they don't care how long it took. :D Some schools make you redo them if it took too long... but when I read on the immunizations website it said you should never restart a vaccine because they are just boosts and space between doesn't matter as long as you got the required amount. When I called Brookhaven they said thats fine just make sure you can prove you have the shots. So I will be taking all the advice from people who post :D thank you for sharing, I see being organized is going to be very important.

*Question* Are we allowed to bring laptops to class? My mom got me a cute net book for nursing school. I'm hoping to save on paper.

The nursing faculty DO NOT allow computers in the classroom, or video recording of skills demonstrations. For the most part, you won't need it. much of your time is hands on, and for the lecture, powerpoints are posted for you to print if you like and take notes on. When it comes to clinicals and preparing the day before, you are NOT allowed to bring a laptop to the hospital, which you will find would be quicker and easier, but it is a HIPPA violation. Sorry! Your cute netbook will have to attend a study session at Starbucks or something! ;) Ironically, saving on paper is not much of an option, as you will have to print a ton each semester.

Congratulations to all who got in.

I had 29.XX points, unfortunately not enough to get in. (Currently taking Patho/Dosage/Pharm/Death and Dying). I'm very disappointed, even though I knew I was probably near the bottom of the list and my odds weren't that great. I sure hope that I can make it in the following semester (w/ my classes I'm currently taking being completed). I had a 94.XX on the HESI and don't think I'll be able to top that if I attempt again.

Can anyone verify if they really taking into account previous applicants? When I spoke to the nursing dept, they told me that they did not, however I have heard rumors of "3 extra points" for previous applicants.

I'm not holding my breath for there to be that many vacancies that would permit my acceptance, being that probably a large amount of people b/t my point total and what the bottom threshold was.

While I wish I was in the shoes of those who posted that they got in, please let me wish you the best of luck in your time in nursing school. :yeah:

Don't be too disappointed- honestly, you jumped the gun a bit. 94 on the HESI is great! However, the name of the game is having your support courses done. I applied 3 times! I jumped the gun on my first try too. Up until this semester they did include 3 extra points on your second application, but did away with it to be more fair and get applicants who were truly qualified by grades and completed courses. I imagine that pretty soon they will have to re-vamp their admissions process. There is even talk of including interviews. It sounds like you are dedicated and will have no problem getting in next round, and could possibly be an alternate this time! Many applicants also apply to El Centro and other schools, and could very well decline their spot at Brookhaven.

Wow! Sweetpea, thank you so much for taking the time to be so thorough, it shows that you are a very sweet person (I see why you go by Sweetpea:heartbeat) and you will be a great nurse...thanks again

Would love to meet you and give you a big hug:loveya:

:tku::tku:

Well thank YOU for the compliment! I could definitely be an ambassador for the program, lol.

Here is some advice though, for everyone...

Before now, you were all in competition with each other to get into this program. Now, you have all been accepted. Let the competition stop there. This program is fierce, and you may encounter some classmates who seem to have it all going right, and may have a bit of an attitude and keep to themselves. Don't be like that. Help each other through, and try to encourage each other to graduate as a class of 40! Naturally, don't help someone to the point that they are dragging you down, but the competition is over. Honestly, your friends and family will probably become frustrated at times when you are in class or clinicals or too busy studying or care planning or are too tired from everything or doing your volunteer hours or have to take a test or have to go repeat your skills checkoff. As loving as they are, they will not completely understand what you will be going through, but there will be 39 others right alongside who will. Don't burn bridges. And think about this- some of your classmates may end up getting a job that you like and could be a reference for you....

Hmmm, just remembered that you are a class of 60, oops! Make that 59 others! Whew, that's a big group!

Congrats to everyone who made it for the fall! I hope to be one of you getting an acceptance email/letter this time next year! I'll be applying in Spring 2012 for their Fall 2012 session. I am in A&P1 and Chem now, will be taking Micro, Dev. Psych, A&P2 and humanities over the summer and then Patho, Pharm, Dosage and End of Life in the fall. It's will be a busy and full schedule until December but it will be worth it :)

Thank you Sweatpea for the wonderful advice! Yes, we will be a class of 60 - many personalities, many different ideas, many different ways of looking at what is most important! But also, many happy smiling faces as we take this first big step towards our career goal! Looking forward to meeting each and everyone and working together towards accomplishment, not seperately!:loveya:

Congrats again to those that made it!! Thank you sooo much sweetpea for all the helpful info! Cant wait to meet everyone......

Hi and congrats to everyone that made it in! I am also in the first semester of the program. (Sweetpea, who are you? lol, I MUST know you). Sweetpea did an excellent job giving y'all the lowdown, I just wanted to add that you also will be required to do 15hrs. volunteer work during the semester. This also eats up time for jobs, family, fun, etc, etc. Yes the program is intense and scary, but it's also really exciting and fulfilling. This semester has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions and its all worth it!

*Question* So what should I read up on this summer? I plan to keep my brain active so that nursing wont be a total shock. Some people say A&P, some say med terms, I plan to do as much as I can.

Sweatpea: thanks for answering my laptop question with so much detail. :) I hope I get to see you and thank you in person in Aug.

I hope to meet you all as well, which I am sure we will! When you guys start in the fall, we will be in our third semester! My name is Kaytee.

Ktosch-we do know each other! I was actually going to post a picture of your textbook/supply package here. It's funny how you and I find the time to post on/monitor these boards, in the midst of clinicals and Major Care Plan, lol! Its actually been my "break time" while clicking away at the MCP.

Hobbits- I would take the summer off! Don't overload yourself, because there will be plenty of that when you start school. But if you must, you should keep fresh on Patho and Pharm. I really wish I could take a refresher on those! You will be expected to understand that stuff- there will be no review during the program. Like you have probably heard, everything builds. Two of my most cherished study materials are Mosby's Memory Notecards for Pharmacology and Pathophysiology. Study 2 of those a day and you should do well!

Also, towards the end of the summer, get on a good schedule that allows for plenty of sleep. Classes are long and start early, but we have a great break room setup with a coffee maker!
