Bronx Community College

Published

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone out there has attended Bronx Community College RN program, from what i hear its terribly hard to get into and one of the best RN programs amongst Cuny if not the best, i hear their reputation exceeds them and their students are recriuted by many. I for one am a nursing student not attending BCC but most if not all of my prof. know their sh**, but i was wanting to hear from the younger generation if its a good program.

The program is rigorous. It was one of the most stressful tasks of my life. In my opinion, there are too many arrogant professors in the department.

Hi Cuzhenrys and girls1,

I saw your postings and was just curious... where did you hear that BCC was terribly hard to get in to? Is that really true?

The reason I ask is that I was just there today and met with an admissions counselor. I already have a Bachelor's Degree in an unrelated field and took A&P I and II over the summer at WCC and am registered to take Microbiology & Chem, also at WCC, in the Fall. I also have all of the core liberal arts classes from my B.S. degree. ...So, the person I met with today was really accommodating and said to keep the classes I was registered to take at WCC and contact this other person in Nursing admissions in Mid-Sept for a meeting. Tho it's a 2-year program, he said he felt they'd "make accommodations for me". I haven't had any treatment like that from any other places I've contacted -- like, EVER. Pace, College of New Rochelle, even WCC... so I was wondering if the program being so hard to get in to was really true.

I think if you have the grades that its not really a problem to get into the program, that is they take those with the highest overall GPA and work their way down. but i would strongly suggest that you have a meeting with the chair of the department because there are lots of placement exams and test you have to take before being accepted into the program, for example in addition to passing the pax rn you have to take a math placement exam and score a certain level or take a remedial course to be admitted into their pharmacology course , not to mention you have to apply with the nursing department in order to be considered for this course in the first place and like i stated before they take the top 25 with the highest overall gpa. Same goes for Chemistry if you have not taken it already. Anyway its worth having a meeting with the chair and hearing what they have to say because although its a junior college i believe their nursing program ranked 5 in the country beating out alot of other senior colleges.

The person I met with said that since I've taken the GRE and also the TEAS exam, I may not need to take that admission test and they would "need to make special accommodations" for this pharmacology class. I'll already have Chem, A&P I and II and Microbiology by the time I'd be starting, too, so the Chem wouldn't be a problem and I guess they figure since I've done all the college math stuff, they weren't concerned about that. But they did say something about the pharmacology class.

Anyway, I realize that the price is right and it isn't about the scenery, but it seemed kinda dumpy, no?

I'm hearing so many bad things about every program, including BCC. I kinda don't know what to do. Pace is so dam expensive if I even get in, which I may not.

What did you end up doing?

Well i would seriously meet with the chair person because she does different things for different people depending on individual circumstances, currently ive been accepted to Helene fuld College of Nursing and im in the process of applying to BCC's program. BCC is my first choice but i too have heard terrible things about both programs. As for the setting i kind of like it but ofcourse im from the bronx and its in walking distance from my home lol

The person you talked to was trying to be helpful but CUNY schools don't make accomodations for anyone. If anything they give you a double portion of red tape. Talk to someone in the nursing program when I was looking around at nursing programs in CUNY, they all had some quirky rules such as you could not apply to enter the clinical sequence until you completed the pre-nursing courses with a grade on record. Of course the application period was in the middle of the semester so if you were taking your last course you may have to wait another year to start. Others had resident requirements. I could go one. Hopefully you can ask the nursing program for admissions guide or something so you get the correct information.

Great... Well, I guess I'll have to apply to a whole bunch of programs and see what happens! Thanks for the response.

IM currently enrolled in BCC now, and its is freakn crazy!!

Theres alot of pre-reqs you have to take. and hidden classes that you might need to take;which of course they tell later you when you go register. I've been in that school since January 2008 til now and im still doing my pre-reqs.

The program itself, i heard from advisor and students who have graduate, its not hard to get into but just a long damn waiting list, which they pick out by your GPA. so you have to make sure you maintain a B or C+ to get picked out of the list.

Mind you, books and materials are expensive there.

NO school spirit what so ever, everyone just seems dead. lols

I feel like the majority of the teachers and staff dont really care, youll be lucky if you get a good one.

IN my opinion, other schools would be just as good as BCC. if anything faster with the program because of the classes. But you gotta remember, its not the school, its how persisitant you are. ******** always seems to find a way into anything. so its how serious and dedicated you are with your education.

Unlike myself, i let the social life and school stress get to me and wasted alot of time and now is regretting my time at BCC , it just seem like the best option at the time ;(

So, are you saying that even if you stay focused on getting finished asap, it tends to take longer to complete than you originally expected?

exactly, we have this degree solution sheet, and it tells you what pre and main course you need to take to get that nursing degree when you go register but what they dont put down is the remedials for the pre reqs( like one of the main class is chem 17 but before you take that you have to take chem 02) along with the school requirements and electives (ocd1, 2 writing intensive classes and five elective course).

i didnt expect all of that..i would have thought I'd be in the nursing program by this fall but instead im still taking pre reqs and placements exams i didnt know about. so i can imagine how the actual program will be.

and may i add majority of the staff and teachers arent really all that great. youll be lucky if you get a good or decent one.

like i said though, if you focus, youll get it in the long run, but for a person who wanna make money and get into the feild fast, i say do some research before hopping into that school. theres alot of programs i didnt know about that i wish i would heard of before.
