Brisbane Suburbs

Published

Hooray!! Me and my other half both now have jobs at the PAH in Brisbane, starting when we get over there in July, all being well with the Visa.

Just a quick question, any recommendations on suitable suburbs to get a rental property in. Really want somewhere close to the hospital, but also close to citylife!

Any suggestions gratefully received!!

PAH is in Wooloongabba (1st order of the day - learn how to pronounce THAT one properly:p). I don't actually recommend the 'gabba as it would be expensive. Other nearby suburbs though include Stones Corner, Dutton Park and Annerly. I think Dutton Park/ Annerly would probably suit you better.

This site should help

We also have a pretty good bus service that stops just outside PAH so the bus is an option as well.

Kangaroo Point - close to work, southbank, town, story bridge hotel.

Coorparoo - lots of units, handy to work, shops.

Annerley, Stones Corner, Woolloongabba...............

I have lived in this area for the past 15 years, it's inner/close to city living, an eclectic mix of residential families, rental properties and boarding houses with interesting tenants.

The train line and bus way as well as the bike way is close to a lot of these places , so check that out as well.

All the best.

Do either of you actually work in the PAH. Just trying to find out how the shift system works. I'm going to be working in the medical unit and my girlfriend in the ED and we're a bit worried we're never actually going to see each other!!

They seemed to be saying that we get 4 days off a fortnight, and that the shifts are listed about 2 weeks in advance. Does that sound right?

We usually (it varies from place to place) have a 2 - 4 week roster. By LAW the roster MUST be out 3 days before it starts and cannot be changed after that without notifying you.

Again it very much depends on the workplace, some places are trialling 10 and 12 hour shifts, some still are 8 hours. If you are full time that means only 38.5 hours a week so you get roughtly 5 days off a fortnight but you, can, to some extent, "bank" that extra rostered day off and take them at one time.

Again depending on the workplace you can reguest what shifts you wish to work - but usually there is a limit to the number of requests per roster. You WILL however be asked if you want to sign a "8 hour" agreement. Now we have what is known as "Late/earlies" this is when you work to 11pm at night and start again at 7 am in the morning, BUT this is actually against the industrial law relating to shift workers - hence the signed agreement. If you do not sign they must give you a minimum of 10 hours between shifts. This however may mean that you end up working a week of "lates" followed by a week of "earlies"

PAH is BIG! You could land a concord in it's main foyer. It is what we call a "tertiary referral hospital" in other words ANYTHING that is too hot to handle by other hospitals from Birdsville east to Brisbane is handled by PAH. Get set to see some weird and wonderfuls.

PAH does NOT do any midwifery though and just about has apoplexy the few times they get the labouring Mum into A&E (We are more likely to refer to ED as A&E and almost never call it ER)

Some neccessary translations

"Going out for a Fag" - means to have a cigarette - it is a perfectly innocent phrase commonly used.:p

"nick off" - leave, go elsewhere

"Smoko" - less common now but morning/afternoon tea

There are a few differences in drug names too. Epinephrine is Adrenaline but all QLD hospitals are part of the Clinicians Knowledge Network (CKN) which has the online Mims and Drugindex - look up the latter it has listings of ALL names the drug is known as.

Hope you enjoy Brisbane!!:D

Coorparoo is very nice. It's conveniant to everything and busline.

Here is a map of the local area around the PAH to give you a bit of a guide to the local suburbs..

You are best to stay on the southside of the river, or the traffic can get very congested when you are trying to get across. The local areas immediately surrounding the PAH, such as Dutton Park, Fairfield, Greenslopes, Coorparoo, Woolloongabba have many unit blocks, both in older and newer styles. Areas such as Holland Park, Mt Gravatt, Sunnybank, Camp Hill, Carina, Tarragindi, Nathan, Salisbury, Hawthorne, Morningside etc have more houses. The southside is easy to get around, with a good network of roads, and the South East Freeway (M1) makes it even easier to get around if you are looking along the Holland Park, Mt Gravatt, Nathan, Macgregor, Eight Mile Plains, Rochedale, Springwood corridor. I live at Mt Gravatt, and it is an 8 minute drive into the city, the PAH is about 5 mins.

Good hunting :)

Some fantastic advice, I don't know why though, but I keep getting drawn to Kangaroo Point!!!

Housing can be VERY expensive at Kangaroo point and there are a lot of overseas students there. Beware real estate agents - THEY will try to saddle you with something definitely second rate but at a top price.

I agree, you can also look at houses for rent in these suburbs on http://www.realestate.com.au/ select Queensland and type in the name of the suburb you are looking at. I live near Springwood and it is a 15 - 25 min drive on the freeway to the PAH depending on the time of day and traffic. Good luck, and welcome :)

When I lived in Brisbane working at the PA I lived on the north side. The shifts meant I was always travelling outside of peak hour, so the drive from Wilston, near Lutwyche Road only took about 12 minutes from home to work. This was if I managed to catch a few green lights on Ipswich Road. Actually it will depend on what type of suburb you want to live in. Brisbane is very widely spread out, so bayside suburbs can be 30 to 40 mins. drive into town, while inner suburbs are more densly populated and can be reached within 20 mins. Try renting in Coorparoo or Carina to start out. The rents can be reasonable, they're accessable to everyplace, and are 5 mins from PA. And yes, PA is a monster, only redeveloped in the last 7-8 years, like a small city.Hope you enjoy!!!!!!!
